Question:
Has any one lost a SS Disability benefit after having the surgery ?
I have been on SS Disability for almost 10 years. Due to many health factors, one being morbid obesty. So I am a little scared of losing benefits even though without the weight I still will be not able to work. — bbwswitch (posted on February 22, 2004)

I dont know if losing weight will affect your ssd. I have been on ssd for
3 years. I had a review last summer and was told my benefits would stop.
I appealed and my benefits were continued. I have ssd because I have
congestive heart failure. I had one echocardiagram that was good, so ssd
thought I could work. I had another echo done and it was not good, so they
backed off and reinstated my benefits.
My weight was not why I recieved ssd. If you have other major problems
as to why you recieve ssd you probably will keep your benefits. Even if
they try to stop benefits appeal. Appealin does work. I had my lap RNY on
oct1 03 and have lost 75 pounds. I tried to work since I do feel better,
but weight loss is not going to improve my heart, maybe I wont get worse.
I had wls so I could qualfy for a heart transplant. I may need a trnsplant
down the road. At 300 plus pounds I was not eligible, now I am eligible.
Some people are only on ssd because of their weight and those people may
have to go back to work. Good luck on your journey.

While it may be true that TODAY you can't get disability just because
you're morbidly obese, ten years ago you COULD. My original awards letter
stated that I was disabled due to obesity, and at my psych consult the doc,
who worked with Social Security for years, told me that I would probably
lose my benefits once I lost a significant amount of weight---if I had
other health problems I could appeal, or re-apply, but that it WOULD come
up.
