Question:
How do I STOP losing weight?

I know this has been asked before, but I never really paid attention cause I didn't think it would be me. After sifting through the library, I am looking for fresh opinions. I am 5'6, 129 pounds. I am 20 months post op. I really really do not want to lose any more weight, but it keeps coming off. I tried to add more carbs to the diet and eat more often, but if I don't eat constantly all day (which I can't always with work), I'll lose 2 pounds in one day. What did others do to stop themselves without returning to bad habits?    — emilyfink (posted on February 10, 2004)

I was told by my nutritionist and surgeon to up my calories, up my carbs, eat frequent snacks and drink with my meals to stop my weight loss. It has worked for me but I am constantly afraid i will start gaining and not stop. So far, so good.

instead of the low-cal protien shakes, why don't you try one with more calories like body builders use? you could sip on it during the day and get in your protien that your body will always need.

Can you lower your water and still stay healthy? I know thin people who when they want to lose just up their water. Maybe you can go down to 64 oz? If all else fails, my roommate is starting up a chocolate truffles business and 4 of those a day does the trick. Believe me, I know. ;)

Can you give an example of what you eat during an average day? That might give us little more info to work with.

It is next to impossible to lose 2 pounds in one day and have it be fat (or muscle). It would involve a calorie expenditure of 7000 calories above what you are taking in for that day. Therefore, the 2-pound weight loss in that day must be fluid...JR

A girl in our support group had the same problem. Her nutritionist and Dr had her add boost or ensure to her diet. No her weight is steady and her labs are good. You really need to see a Dr though to see if your labs are good and see if there is some reason for the loss. Tapeworms can cause weight loss when they are allowed to get out of hand. There could be other physical or non-physical reasons as well.

I was told one way to stop losing is to reverse the pouch rules. My surgeon told me to start drinking when I eat and it worked for me and my weight has been consistent for years.

I went through this also. My surgeon had me track my food for a week to come up with an average daily calorie amount. Then she had me add 100 calories a day for a week. I still lost. Then another 100 a day the next week. I did that until one week I stopped losing. That is the level I kept my food at and my weight stayed stable for a full two years. Then in year three: bingo, I gained 15 pounds. Typical bounce-back, butt-be-back, whatever. I have since taken that off with the South Beach eating plan and am now stable again. hugs, Ann rny 9/10/99 260/124
