Question:
Sorry, but I have another TT question.
I already called my Surgeon once today and forgot to ask about the swelling, so can anyone answer this so I don't have to call back, it makes me feel like a pain in the butt :o) My legs are really swollen and my husband noticed it too b/c they look alot bigger than normal and also I had mentioned earlier that I had gained weight (10lbs) since last Monday's TT. Is this normal? Thank you for the help! — Sandy M. (posted on February 2, 2004)

Sandy, I gained 14 lbs of fluid while in the hospital and have lost it now.
My legs don't seem bigger but my pubis area sure does! It is all puffy
and very sore. That is where the two drains were in and fell out. I have
read that some people retain fluid in the legs. My doc told me to drink a
lot of water and it will flush out sooner. I am hooked on the following:
Crushed ice, Cran-Grape Lite (4 oz) and the same amount of Club Soda
allowed to go flat. I drink it constantly. It seems like everything is
tasting strange...kind of like my tongue was burned. You know that felling
when you can't taste anything for a while. I was under anesthesia a week
ago for 8 hrs so I assume I had a lot of anesthesia to get rid of. I have
had a lot of BM's and feel so much better after a bowel movement. Are you
taking a diuretic for fluid? I do once a day and it helps immmensely. I
have urinated a lot too. Hope you are feeling better. I feel the same way
when I "bother" my doctor but isn't that why they are there? I
hate it when preop the surgeon/doctor is always there for you and then
after the surgery is over, it's like "ok go get better now and I will
see you in a couple of weeks."

I say call your Dr. It could be something like Congestive Heart failure,
high blood pressure, or clots. And if its just fluid retention they can
order something to get rid of the excess. In the mean time prop your feet
up to help with some of the swelling.
