Question:
Is this dumping? Or did I overeat?

Saturday night I had a snack before bed like I always do. I had about 1/2 cup sugar free ice cream. About 15 minutes after eating it I started to feel funny and then started throwing up. It lasted for a little more than an hour. At first I thought I had ever eaten and then I remebered that a while back I had eaten the same brand of sugar free icecream (Kroger- butter pecan) and was throwing up for hours. At that time I thought I had overeaten too. I wonder if it could have been dumping because the 1st time when I got so much sicker I ate the whole 1/2 cup of the Kroger brand and this time only about 1 tablespoon and the rest of the 1/2 cup was Blue Bunny sugar free which I have eaten several times with no problem. I thought maybe this time I didn't get as sick because I ate such a small amount. I never thought I would get sick form this icecream. It doesn't have any sugar of any form. It is sweetened with aspartame. What do you guys think?    — Stacie B. (posted on January 26, 2004)

It sounds to me like it just might not agree with you, could also be the aspertame, some people are sesitive to that as well. Maybe the cold? I guess it could be alot of things including dumping, is it high in fat?

I don't know how post op are you but I hear lactose intolerance can develop any time after surgery. I believe I developed it (I'm only about 5 weeks out). I would get very sick from eating/drinking milk. Is it made with milk? BTW I'm looking for a sugar free icecream. Where do you purchase that from?

Since my surgery I cannot tolerate milk with or without lactade. I tried soy milk but didn't like the taste. I even dump on SF ice cream. I found a milk type product (dairy beverage) called Carb Countdown at Walmart. It has 12 gms of protein and only 3 carbs in 8 ozs with only 100 calories. It's made with fat free milk cream, whey protein and is sweetened with splenda. For whatever reason, I can tolerate it just fine. I've even heated the chocolate milk for a treat. And here's an answer for the previous poster, you can get SF icecream, Blue Bunny brand, sweetened with splenda at Walmart. They also have Blue Bunny brand yogart sweetened with splenda too.

Hi Stacie This sounds just like me! I thought SF ice creams would sit well with me but after a few months they didn't. Of course I can have a few spoonfulls but one time I ate a small bowl of it (could have been 1/3 to 1/2 cup) and had trememdous stomach pains and vomited as well. This was aspartame sweetened and I suppose my pouch didn't like it. This sounds like dumping big time. Remember, we can eat something for a while with no dumping and suddenly it can just happen. I am also lactose intolerant from surgery but did take a lactaid tablet before the ice cream. I have stayed away from ice cream for a while, knowing I can't eat more than a mouthful or two without having a problem. Hugs, Kim S. Open RNY Nov.4/02 (-162)

Many people also have this same reaction to the sugar alcohols in "sugar free" and "no sugar added" products. Check the label and see how much sugar alcohols are in it - you might be surprised. Not all products are the same, you may just need to look for something with less sugar alcohols in it.
