Question:
Protein Drinks
Are there any protein drinks out there that are not lumpy and leave a horrible taste? I have tried a few and they are really grainy in texture and I cannot handle it, they make me gag. Are there any smooth ones out there? I also am not looking to spend a fortune. Any suggestions would be great. — Mini Gadget (posted on December 4, 2003)

Go to vitalady.com. She has numerous protein shakes and you can purchase
samples so you can try them before you spend a fortune. I should know. I
couldn't do the thick shakes, they made me gag as well. I tried and really
swear by the "Nectar" flavors. Good Luck!

I, too, hate all protein drinks that are on the market. I have recently
found that I can make something on my own that is relatively cheap and
tastes great. It is perfect for cold weather, too, and takes care of any
chocolate cravings if you have them. I take one packet of diet hot cocoa
mix or no-sugar-added hot cocoa mix, eight ounces of hot water and mix that
together. I then add one-half to one packet of splenda, depending on what
brand of cocoa I'm using and how sweet it is to begin with. I let the
mixture cool slightly (just so that it's not steaming) and then add one
scoop of the unflavored unjury powder. You have to add it slowly and stir
like crazy to get all of the lumps to disappear. This provides 22 grams of
protein. I think it's great. I can't get all of my protein in unless I
drink it. Try it and let me know what you think. Good luck! ~Kristy (lap

I also ordered from vitalady.com. I tried many different samples, but I
liked the Pure Whey Protein Stack more than anything else. I just use a
few ounces of water and use a shaker cup to mix it. It's not lumpy at all.
I've only tried the chocolate, so I don't know if the other flavors are
good, but it mixes up really well.

I use unflavored Unjury with orange juice and it's pretty darn good. I got
Item Number K1531
Tornado Mixer Set of 4 Hand-Held Portable Mixers from QVC and it works
great. I keep a mixer at work along with the Unjury and on the days I
don't think I will get enough protein in, I have a protein drink.
Sapala-Wood Micropouch 12/12/02 - 213/130/125.

Just an added hint to Kristy's post. If you add the liquid to the powder,
rather than the powder to the liquid, it will mix easier (there's some
chemical explanation for why this works, but I don't have it).

I'll second the vote for Champion Pure Whey Protein Stack in chocolate. I
don't even use a shaker. It mixes fine with a spoon and tastes good in just
water. I have not found another one that mixes so smoothly. I keep several
scoops on hand at work and pack them when I will be in the car for a while.
Since they mix so easily with just water they are perfectly portable: No
special container or equipment required!

you say you are not looking to spend a lot. Well, I use Carb Solutions
from Walmart. They are 8.96 a can. You have to use a blender but they are
pretty good to be so cheap. I add bananas and things like that to mine. I
was using the EAS Whey from walmart but they have had to stop carrying
them. Like you, I can't spend big bucks on all these drinks to only find
out most of them are nasty and even the good ones are too expensive for me.

I use Isopure low carb chocolate and mix with water for 50g protein. Its
fine, not thick and sweet. You can get it at GNC but it is expensive. Or
you can try an individual one. GNC will refund you if you don't like it. If
you do like it, send me an email and I'll let you know where I get it
online for half of what GNC charges.

A note on the Ispoure in particular, and protein drinks in general: you can
absorb only about 30 grams of protein at a feeding, so using something with
more is a waste of the additonal protein. Try mixing in only half of the
recommended amount to get 25 grams of protein that you will use. Because
you're not wasting those extra protein grams, it also makes the protein
powder more affordable.

Vespa's comment has worked for me since the beginning. Also, to keep from
getting lumps I mix the powder and liquid in a gravy shaker from
tupperware. They also sell protein shakers in many vitamin shops for 99
cents. There are other proteins as well. Ones that mix like a juice.

I dunno about the absorption thing, but it generally takes me from 6am to
1pm to get thru my drink, and I top up with ice. So I don't think that
qualifies as one feeding. Now I'm 15 weeks out my surgeon told me to half
the protein drink anyway, so I am saving now.

Another vote for Champion Nutrition Pure Whey stack!!! I use a full scoop
of the strawberry and 1/3 scoop of the chocolate and LOVE IT!! Mixes great
too! I only use about 4 oz of water when I make my shakes, and have no
problem getting my protein in, since I love the shakes so much. But,
definitely try Vita-Lady for samples! I haven't tried the Nectars yet, but
I know so many people that LOVE them too! Good luck! By the way, I order my
powder online at dpsnutrition.com - very affordable and I use their $3
shaker and it works great! Open RNY 5/12/03 - down 90 lbs

I love Nectar- it is more like a "drink" than
a shake.... and it is not thick at all. It is fruity, instead of chocolate
or vanilla. You can get affordable samples at WLSsuccess.com. They have
caribbean cooler, apple and very cherry berry. I live on this stuff! One
scoop mixes with 6 oz of water, and has 90 calories. YUM!

My #1 is ProScore 100, followed by Pure Whey Stack, both chocolate (like
there's anything else?), but this week I'm also taken by Nectar Fuzzy
Navel, reminds me of Suny Delight. They all mix with a few oz of water and
taste, not bearable, but OH BOY-YUMMY!
