Question:
I'm a little over 3 months out and am having a problem with my face breaking out.
I've never had a big problem with this before but since surgery by face is constantly breaking out. Am I deficient in some vitamin? I'm having blood work done next week so maybe I'll find out then. — Gail L. (posted on December 1, 2003)

Hi. My skin wasn't perfect as a pre-op. I had acne rosacea---extremely
red, itchy and rashy skin on my face. I had been using several creams that
were prescribed by a dermatologist. After surgery, they no longer were
effective, so I went back to him and he gave me another form of the same
medication. I questioned him as to why he would use something again that
wasn't effective, and he "snowed" me, telling me it was stronger
and would help. I, as well as my pharmacist were doubtful and we were
right. The cream was ineffective. SO, I found a new dermatologist who
prescribed different medication, and within a week saw a dramatic
improvement. I would see a Dr., and tell him/her about the surgery. My
bloodwork has always been good, but my skin and nails have been really
different than they wee pre-op. I would see a dermatoligist if you can.
It can't hurt.

Funny you should ask that question - I've been sitting here all night
picking at my zits wondering what the heck is happening on my chin?! I
read that it is hormones. As we drop the weight, apparently there are a
lot of hormonal things going on as well. Sorry not more scientific - ha ha
ha. I wouldn't worry about it being a vitamin deficiency. I asked the
teenager up the street what he recommends for zits. After he gave me a
dirty look (okay maybe I shouldn't have asked him while his girlfriend was
there), he said Stridex. Best of luck to you - I'm headed to the drug
store!

We store estrogen in our fat cels and as we lose weight so rapidly the
estrogen is constantly being released into our systems. A couple of things
can happen with this. We can get permanent PMS as well a depressed and we
can also get some serious skin eruptions. It wears off as you slow down
with the weight loss. My skin is now really nice and clear with only the
occasional issue with my period (again hormonal) I did have acne before
surgery but now I don't. Just another perk of getting the weight off I
suppose. Lap RNY 1/15/03 277/156/150ish

I've been having the same problem myself and I'm over 10 months out. I
never in my life had pimples until now (I could probably count on my one
hand how many pimples I've had since I was 13) - so this was quite
disturbing to me also. I don't really have any answers, even after having
talked with my Doctor and a dermatologist - both relating it due to the
release of Estrogen in my fat cells. The GREAT news is now when I have a
break out, I know for sure within a weeek or so that I'll have a drop in
weight. I kinda' look forward to breaking out now(hee, hee). Best of
luck!

I think this is a common problem following weight loss surgery. I started
using proactive a year ago. Honestly, I would pay three times its
price...I love it.

There's a product by Clean and Clear that you can wear under makeup or by
itself..it's a clear gel and I THINK has salicylic acid in it...and it will
get rid of your zit in a day. Myself and my 12 year old son SWEAR by it!!
It has no scent or color or anything. Its called Clean and Clear Maximum
strength Invisible blemish treatment. I think it's under 4.00

Hum, my face has cleared up dramatically since surgery. I have perfect
skin now, something I never had pre-op. But it may be hormonal thing your
body is going through.
