Question:
Has anyone heard that it's a good idea to eat mostly protein before suregery .
I heard that if I eat mostly protein before my surgery 12/3 I will have and easier time with the susrgery and post op. Has anyone ever heard of this before? — Judith W. (posted on November 1, 2003)

My surgeons group put all their patients on a high protein diet before
surgery. It is supposed to shrink your liver and make the surgery go
easier for you. a lot of docs do this, so it isn't just people talking.
It is a lot of the docs requiring it.

Protein helps us heal faster. I wish I had known this before surgey. I knew
I had to have it after but for some reason it never dawned on me that it
would make a difference after. If people ask I always tell them if they can
to start getting in 60 grams of protein before surgery.
Good luck!!!

My surgeon also does a special pre-op diet to chrink the liver. We are put
on veggies and protein for 2 weeks before surgery. Since our post-op plan
doesn't use protein drinks we are not encouraged to try them, just eat
regular protein. I ate as much as I wanted, did not start to diet. What I
found is that the protein really stuck with me and I wasn't hungry between
meals. Granted I would put away a chunk of protein, but it worked as I
lost 21 lbs and the surgoen didn't say anything about my liver being too
huge.
