Question:
Does anyone else feel naseous after eating??
I am 3 weeks post op and have been on pureed foods but still feel quite nauseous after eating. I am afraid I am not getting in enough protein because of this and I have no energy to move. I have lost 20 lbs but just don't enjoy eating at all anymore. A typical day consists of a bananana, applesauce, sugar free pudding, mashed potatoes and my protein shake if my stomach is up to it. I find it hard to get in all the water too. — Anne K. (posted on October 11, 2003)

This early on, the fruits might be making you dump. There again, most
everything made me nauseous in the beginning (meats still do). I hated
eating until just recently and I still don't enjoy it a lot.

First off you could be eating too fast. I did that the first few weeks out
and thought I was dumping, just eating too fast. Also the bananna is a big
dumping thing according to what I have read a lot of times. I tried split
pea soups with a can of ham added to it, then blended. Chicken soup with a
can of chicken and blended, or cream of potato or broccoli soup (I used the
dehydrated ones you cook for a while) then add more broccoli and ham or
chicken, the blend. They tasted yummy, added a bit more protein and added a
big amount of variety into my life. I found that a can of split pea soup
would last a long time, so I froze them in small containers. Also, I don't
normally eat canned meat or soups but they are convenient and soft. You can
also add roasted chicken and it's a good meat to eat after you are released
to soft (no liquid foods). Good luck!

I didnt suffer from this problem; but I have seen on certain doctors web
sites that they 'prescribe' anti nauteous meds.. maybe you need that... if
your already going slow. I know my doctor gave me anti nauteous (spellng
sorry) meds iv form while in the hospital.
at the beginning YOUR not going to get in everything. You take your
'vitamins' and do what you can.. over time ...

p.s. I would try to go back to basic - clear beef/chicken broth, sugar free
popcicles, and jello.. IF that doesnt cause any upset then proceed to add
'one food' at a time.. You mentioned, sugar free pudding, mashed potaotes,
protein shakes, could be youve become 'lactose' intolant already, and the
'milk' is causing the problem...

Hi, Anne: I'm almost 8 weeks out and facing the same demons you are. I
get nauseous easily. I went to my surgeon yesterday to see if there was
some magic pill that would make it go away...instead, she admitted me to
have me scoped; my stoma was about 10 mm, it needed to be stretched to 15
mm. They also removed a loose staple. That probably wasn't making me feel
real good either. All afternoon they kept trying to give me stuff to eat,
but nothing was going down well. My main problem is that I'm HIGHLY
allergic to milk, and they kept giving me yogurt and stuff, so that wasn't
helping. Finally, they decided to give me some Prevacid and Reglan, both
are supposed to help with reflux and acid problems and nausea. I'm hoping
this helps. For my protein shake, I got the unflavored whey protein from
GNC and like to mix it up in my orange juice. If I do have to use milk,
I'm gonna use the Lactaid. I agree, getting in water is tough. I need
some type of timer that goes off every 5 minutes or so to remind me to sip!
Talk to your doc about taking something for the nausea, it may help! Good
luck!

Looks like your diet is about 95% sugars, depending on what you mean by
protein shake. What volume are you eating per meal? How long after does
the nausea hit? How does water taste? Have you tried cutting your volume in
half, for example? And keeping sugars in teh single digits per meal? For
example, no sugar added applesauce is still about 12g of sugar in a half
cup. That would make me miserable. What is your eating "rhythm"?
What do you do first, how long between meals, how do you drink the
water--how much before/after meals?

Hi, I think both Lisa and Michelle are on the right track. We are all going
to experience this same kind of problem, nausea, disinclination to eat. It
passes, as many folks on the Losing Side have attested for us. I am three
weeks post-op and am dealing with light nausea all the time. But if you
can't take in much, then absolutely everything you can take in has to count
big time! Most of your foods are carbs, not proteins. Keep a small
collection of these foods in your frig: tuna salad, peanut butter, cottage
cheese. Reach for them first when its time to eat, then go real s-l-o-w.
I do much better if I chew chew chew and only take one half teaspoon per
minute. So its taking me about 20 minutes to consume my soft foods. But
every bit of it goes to the protein count. Good luck!!!
