Question:
Help for swimmer's hair?

I am 8 weeks postop and have been swimming at least 2-3 times a week since surgery. My hair is shoulder length and very curly, and colored. I think it is starting to feel brittle from all the chlorine, but I think I'm also starting to have the postop hair loss as well. I get in plenty of protein, and I know there is not much I can do but ride out the hair loss, but do any swimmers have tips on hair care products to combate all that chlorine??    — bethybb (posted on September 23, 2003)

I swim or do water aerobics every day. I use John Frieda Sheer Blonde shampoo and the same brand of extra strength cream conditioner that comes in a short jar. Gotta say my hair looks great most of the time.<p>According to my doc and born out by my experience, hair loss starts about the 3rd month and stops about the 6th month. By the 9th month you will see a lot of new growth. I didn't notice that anything I did made it any better or worse. It just ran its course.

WET your hair before swimming. Your hair is like a sponge it will absorb water. If you wet it it doesn't absorb as much....so it doen't get as much clorine. You can also take a dab of conditioner and put it throught he hair before swimming to protect it. There are special chlorine shampoos on the market you can get. They will take the chlorine out of your hair. You can also get a swim cap. My sister got one that was vintage with the big plastic flowers on it.

Hi, I am a licensed cosmetologist, but for the life of me I cannot think of the name of the shampoo, but on the market..try Walmart..there is a shampoo that is a declorinator. Just look in the shampoo isle and also, where they keep the tanning and sunscreen products. If I think of the product I will write back. Also you want to neutralize the ph of your hair. The clorine is alkaline...so using a little vinegar mixed with water and applied to your hair after shampooing and then rinse well with cool or luke warm water might help the Ph. I will try to remember the name of the shampoo. Feel free to email me.

I am a cosmetologist and have done hair now for well too many years hehe I am 30 and have done hair for 11 years. I have owned two salons/spas and the only product I know to strip out the clorine and get your hair back to great health is Malibu Treatments. Now I don't know how you can get them accept for a few places. I know JCPenny Salons used to do them I think they all use the same products but I could be wrong. I dont know if you can buy them and do them at home or not but you can call there and find out if there is a JCPenny Salon in your area. I also recomend wetting your hair before you go into the pool and use a conditioner on your hair after you have wet it down. This will help the clorine to slip off the hair instead of soaking into the hair. A must is to shampoo and condition right after you get out of the pool to make sure any clorine that is even romotely left will get washed off. Paul Mitchell has a great shampoo there T-Tree shampoo will help remove any build up or anything on the hair too but it sounds like you need to do more treatments right now. Ok about the hairloss.... if you are experiencing hair loss more than likely you arn't getting enough protein even though you say you are. Make sure you vitamins, and everything are all good, especially prtein and water. A great product for both deep cleaning and hair loss is Nioxin. Get the full system with the conditioner and gels and everything. This is a great product for thinning hair and will keep your hair follicls clean so the hair will continue to grow and all the products work best if they are all used together. I hope that all helps and if you get the Nioxin you dont need the Paul Mitchell shampoo they both do similar things.

What I noticed first was the "feel" of my hair just before my major hair loss began. It felt dry and brittly (is that a word?) and was very difficult to comb through. Thinking back, it was very similar to how my hair felt when I was swimming. I don't have suggestions for products, however I wanted to say that your problem may or may not be caused by swimming. It might just be the beginning of the hair loss phase and by coincidence you are swimming, as well. I used the Nioxin products during my hair loss phase, just because I liked how they made my hair/scalp feel. Did nothing for my hair loss, though. Good luck! Shelley
