Question:
I am one year out and like everyone else feel that I am eating too much.

I would like to know what some of the typical diets are for patients one year out. Also, I am anxious to have a diet soda does anyone ever drink soda again? — Rosalyn R. (posted on September 16, 2003)

I am only shy of 3 months out and there are times I too feel like I eat too much, but if I realy look at what I eat it's half or less than I used to...and somehow the weight does come off. I have been able to sip soda, I began by only wetting my lips with it, and now over the course of an hour I can drink a half of a can, although I don't do it often, I think you will know if you can or not...before it used to hurt to drink it, all the gas, but that's ok now, just sip it slow. I have a half a can maybe twice a week. It may not even taste the same, I used to be a coke fanatic, now the taste is so horrible I have no desire for it.

Are you at goal and not gaining? If not are you still losing weight? If the answer to either of these questions is yes than I would have to say that you are doing great. It does not matter what anyone else is eating. I am sure that to many people think I don't eat enough but I am comfortable and healthy so I have to do what is right for me. AND I am sure that there are those out there who would think I eat too much. As far as the soda goes I occasionally will have a little and I have found that it just does not thrill me the way it used to. I know that many people drink soda post op.

let me say daily I get people asking "can you have that?", "did you just eat"... yes I can have a sugar free posicle, yes I just ate a whole 7 oz lean cusine, yes I can have a bite of my husbands dessert... It makes me so mad I want to shout it is none of their business... but people feel so inclined to commment... I say as long as you are feeling good about it go for it, hopefully you know by now what is and isn't good and go from there... as long as you are making good choices, and staying healthy by all means just forget about others...I suppose these are folks who have not had WLS?

I never worry about how much I eat, just what I eat. I find I can eat all the protein and veggies I want, and I can put away a good bit, and not gain weight. If I eat anything refined though (white sugar, white flour) I can gain weight in no time. So, I try to have protein for breakfast and lunch (1 or 2 eggs w/ cheese, chef salad, deli roll-up, etc) I have a protein for dinner (chicken, steak, shrimp, etc) with veggies for dinner. I don't think it's the volumne as much as the content that gets us in trouble.

I am 18 months post-op. I have lost 124 pounds and am at goa (will be below goal after I get the nerve together to get the tuck). I eat like a normal 140 pound woman, however, something high in chocolate or sweet dairy product make me ill. I eat about the same amount as an 8 year old and snack mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

As for diet soda -- I have been enjoying my diet coke for several months now. At first I let it "fizz-out" quite a bit -- now I pour it over ice and it takes me a while to drink it. I alternate with water and haven't had any problem.

I think Dr. Atkins mixed up the carmel color with citric acid but that's a dicussion for a different board!!

Hope this helps,
