Question:
Has anyone tried Sugar in the Raw as a substitute to sugar and Splenda/Equal?

Actually, Sugar in the Raw is not totally refined like white table sugar.
Many people get this confused with RAW SUGAR which is cane sugar that is
still full of lots of molasses. Sugar in the Raw is simply a brand name
for turbinado sugar that comes in a brown box (by the way, turbinado sugar
is MUCH cheaper in bulk at health food stores and bulk stores, such as
Whole Foods). It is true that it is a refined sugar and is actually made
from sugar cane like regular white sugar, but the refining process stops
one step before becoming white table sugar. The reason most RNY'ers
tolerate this is because it still has a bit of the molasses in it (which is
why it is pale beige in color) and takes longer to process and, therefore,
isn't broken down in the part of the intestine where white sugar is. Just
because you bake a batch of cookies with it, though, doesn't mean you can
eat the whole batch! You are probably still using ingredients that have
fat and plenty of calories. BTC lists it as OK in moderate amounts. Check
out my profile page for a recipe book using turbinado sugar, fructose and
Splenda or get more information for ordering, sample recipes and recipe
index for the book by visiting: www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny
