Hi you are fine hun, a half cup of refried beans is not much at all cuz, first of all they are mushy and then also they ca go thru your system very quickly, so don't worry you are just fien! Congrats on becoming a loser now!

Wow, Fran, I've been seeing you around here so long, I thought you were post-op. Congrats on making it to the losing side. I don't have the answer to your question but did want to tell you that I have Tricare Prime too and have a consult at the end of September to start the ball rolling on a TT/lower body lift and/or breast lift. I'm sure you will be able to hear Tricare laughing at that request but you have to start somewhere. Keep you posted!

I would follow what your plan says. For my plan that would have been too much as I was on 1/8 to 1/4 cup at that point, but plans to vary drastically. The main thing is to listen to your pouch and as soon as you feel any feeling of full, stop. If youa re not sure about the quantity you should be eating please check with the surgeon's office. I'm glad you are tolerating food good. It always helps when things get off to a good start!

Everybody varies, but I could eat that much in refried beans at that stage. I'm 15 months post-op now, and I've been at or under my original goal for six months now (down 140 pounds total at this point). Probably I could eat more than a lot of people, all along the way, but it never added up much in terms of calories, which was how I measured my progress. Don't be too worried about folks who report being full after four bites, or who eat 1/4 to 1/8 of a cup, if your capacity is a little greater than theirs. There will be times you're full, or satisfied, by very little, too, but there will be times it takes more, and if you look at the daily calories, they're still awfully small either way. Don't forget that, eventually, the pouch will allow you to eat a lot more -- nowhere near what you ate as a pre-op, but more -- and it's supposed to do that. It's what you eat, not how much, that will dictate your success in the long run.

Well, that seems like a lot for only 12 days out. But again, it does depend on how big your pouch is as to how much you can eat. Everyone is different and tolerates food differently. I always wanted to be able to eat like a NORMAL small eater would eat. I always planned on eating the right kinds of food, but I sure wanted to be able to eat and enjoy what I ate. There are days I am ravenous and days I eat a VERY little bit. I am 10 months post op and down 190 lbs. 50 more to go then comes the tummy tuck.

Hi, Fran: I know that each surgeon and dietitian has their own plan, but I just wanted to share what my surgeon said, and how I've dealt. Basically I was told to eat no more than 2 ounces at each meal 3 times per day. Well, obviously my eyes are bigger than my stomach, or else I wouldn't have ever overeaten in the first place! LOL <p>Anyway, I went to GFS (Gordon Food Service) and bought one and two-ounce plastic cups; they are very inexpensive and you can buy lids for them also. I got 250 cups per package for around $2.50 and lids to match them for about $1.99. I measure out each meal in these cups, and when it's done, I stop eating. I still haven't learned quite yet when I feel "full", so this has been very valuable in helping me not overeat. Since I know that my pouch holds 2 ounces, that's what I eat and no more. I drink my protein shakes in between meals and that helps me stay full longer. Good luck, I hope these ideas help! Proximal lap rny 08/19/03, -19 lbs.

Fran..Thanks for asking this question. I am 3 1/2 weeks post-op. I worry 24/7 that I am eating to much. I weigh everything I eat and never eat more then 2 oz. of meat/protein and 1 oz. of cooked veggies. Today was the first time my stomach has ever told me I was done. Every other day I have cleaned my plate. I am scared to death that my pouch is to big or the doc messed up somewhere and my surgery is not going to work. I know everyone goes through this. It is just nice to know that I am not alone. When I was 2 1/2 weeks post op I went to Taco Bell and had an order of pintos and cheese, without the sauce, and ate it all in about 25 minutes. I was so scared I had eaten to much. I called a friend when I got home and she said I was fine. She said if I was worried to call my doc on Monday morning and ask him if I was eating to much. You are doing great! Keep up the good work.

Hi! Congrats on making the big decision and on being compliant with the restrictions immediately post=op. Refried beans was one of the first hings I ate about 10 post-op. I'm 1 month + right now. I thinned them slightly with a bit of water, and they kept me more satisfied than anything else. I didn't tell my doc I was doing this, but watered down refried beans technically does fall under full liquids! I suffered no ill effect and have lost 25 lbs. so far. I wish you the best!

Poster here: i didn't write it in my question but i am open RNY and down 20 pounds. i have not been sick or had any sick to my stomach feelings at all. i eat very slowly and get in alot of fluids(not with meals). i used the 1/2 cup refried beans as one whole meal with no problems at all. i feel very lucky because there are so many who are sick all the time, but i don't want to over do it either. i was told that my stomach is 2oz. and that i could hold 1/2 cup at each meal. i didn't think i would be able to do this 12 days postop. 12 days open RNY down 20 pounds.

Fran-- sounds like you're doing fine. I was eating half-cup meals for the first month (and I loved refried beans.) FYI-- the vegetarian style refried beans have a TON of fiber, which is a definite plus. Keep up the good work!

Follow-up to your second post: A 2 ounce pouch explains a lot. Of course you would be able to eat more than someone who has a 1/2 ounce pouch, which is what my quantities I listed were based on. Sounds like you are right on schedule based on the surgery you had. Keep up the good work!
