Question:
I'M SCHEDULED FOR A SCOPE TUESDAY
BECAUSE I'VE BEEN FEELING NAUSEOUS AFTER EATING.WHEN I WENT TO THE DR'S A FEW WEEKS AGO I WAS REALLY DEHYDRATED AND HAD TO HAVE IV FLUIDS. MY QUESTION IS - I'M SCHEDULED FOR A SCOPE TO SEE IF I HAVE A STRICTURE TUESDAY, BUT I'M NOT FEELING AS BAD AS BEFORE. I STILL GET NAUSEOUS SOMETIMES BUT NOT AS OFTEN AS BEFORE. SHOULD I STILL HAVE THE PROCEDURE DONE? AND IF I DO, CAN THEY TELL HOW BIG MY POUCH IS AS WELL AS THE SIZE OF THE STOMA? — sandy V. (posted on August 22, 2003)

Dear Sandy,
Yes, in my opinion you should still have the scope. They can tell you the
size of the stoma and also if the pouch looks good. I have had 4
strictures in the last 2 months and sometimes some days aren't as bad as
others. Because you have alreay had a bout with dehydration don't put off
being scoped. They should be putting you completely out with a MAC for the
scope for your comfort. I know my gastroenterologist that my surgeon uses
puts you out with the MAC it's quick and you wake up very quick with no
hangover. You still can't drive that day, but having had 4 already..the
scope is the easiest. Ask the Dr. before having it that you want to know
what size your stoma was when he scoped you and also, if he did a
dilitation to what size did he do that. Ask him you want to know the size
of your pouch as well. Best wishes and hope your feeling better soon.

Hi there! Yes I would certainly still have the scope done. I had it done
a few weeks ago and they found the inscision between the stoma and the
intestine ulcerated and immedicately put me on medication. Although not
completely healed yet, I do feel somewhat better. The procedure was very
quick and painless for me and I slept GREAT that night! I will probably
need another one done in a couple of weeks and have NO qualms about it at
all. In my opinion it is better to be safe than sorry later on. Hope you
get to feeling better soon!
