Question:
Why can't I seep all night?
I've seen this addressed in the Library by new posts. But not long-term posts. I am 8 months out and suffering with Insomnia. It is common for me to wake up in the night and be awake for 2 or 3 hours at a time. Anyone experiencing this? Any solutions? — sherry H. (posted on August 21, 2003)

You know, I am experiencing the SAME thing. I mean don't get me wrong I do
wake up feeling "rested" but I would once like to get a full
nights sleep. I am sure you can relate. I am anxiously awaiting responses
as well. :0) E........

I'm not sure this is the answer - but I remember years ago when I went on a
'crash' type diet ... I couldn't sleep well. And I learned (from who?)
that it has something to do with your body and the weight loss being so
rapid.

I am not sleeping well either. I think my body misses the massive doses of
drugs that I was taking before surgery... like the blood pressure medicine
and the arthritis medicines I took really made you sleepy. I noticed one
thing though... when I EXERCISE that I am often tired enough to get a
halfway decent night's sleep.

I have had the same problem almost since the beginning (could also be the
fibromyalgia). My Dr has given me Ambien to take when I need. Have had
them for @ 18 months, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I only
take them when absolutely necessary. I have also used melatonin in the
past. Hope you find something that works.

Maybe you don't need as much sleep as you used to. When I was MO I would
crash at 9:30 or 10:00. Now as long as I am eating correctly (read high
protein), I'm not tired until after midnight most nights. You might try
going to bed a little later to see if that will help you sleep thru the
night.

A couple of things could be causing this. I went to my PCP and mentioned
that I had trouble falling asleep, or I would wake up and be awake for a
couple of hours. He said it could be mild depression! (Duh!) He started me
on a low dose of Celexa, and the problem has gone away, for the most part.
I still sometimes have trouble falling asleep, but I chalk that up to
having worked evening shift since I was in high school, up until about 10
years ago - I am a night owl! I thought my sleep problems might have been
due to the over abundance of hormones, bobbing around causing trouble, from
burning fat.

A low dose of an antidepressant will work wonders with the sleeping even if
depression is not part of the issue. I used 25-50mg of Trazodone for
years. Not addictive and worked well. I no longer take it but it sure
helped me tons. Talk to your doctor.

I thought maybe I was the only one! I can fall asleep just fine but wake
up a few hours later and cant go back to sleep. I also found that I am
very hungry when I do wake up in the middle of the night. I try not to
snack - but sometimes do grab just a bite of something, or a drink of
something. I do have a prescription for ambian (sp?) but try not to take
it every night. Now I find my self having mini anxiety attacks over wether
to take it or not - worrying if Ill be able to sleep all night with out it.
Hopefully we figure something out soon. I am looking forward to other
posts.

Are you on thyroid meds? Maybe they need adjusted? My thyroid went
overactive due to some herbal stuff I was taking, and I had a problem
sleeping and was experiancing some anxiety too. I stopped the supplements,
my thyroid went back to "normal" (I'm on synthroid) and the
problem stopped... unless of course I drink too much coffee :)
