Question:
BPD & Runny Nose When Full- What's Up With That?
AND SHE WAS TELLING ME THAT WHEN SHE EATS AND IS FULL HER NOSE WILL START DRIPPING (NOT RUNNING - DRIPPING) SHE SAID PEOPLE IN HER SUPPORT GROUP HAS ALSO MENTIONED THIS. WHEN HER NOSE STARTS DRIPPING SHE KNOWS TO QUIT EATING. DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHY THIS IS, AND WHY DOESN'T THIS HAPPEN TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD RNY'S? THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT — sandy V. I'm 10 months post-op LAP RNY and this happens to me too. Either I get a
runny nose or I start sneezing. I have NO IDEA why this happens!

It sure does happen to at least some of us RNYers! If I continue to eat
even one more bite after the runny nose begins, I'm certainly headed for at
least foamies, and probably thowing up! The answer about why this happens
is kind of gross, so you've been warned if you continue to read. My doc
says it is the mucous in our stomachs that is displaced by the food. When
your pouch is full, the mucuous is forced into the throat and sinuses, and
results in a runny nose.

Thank you for telling us why this happens. I'm also RNY, and have the
drippy nose after eating.

Wow, I'm glad to hear that this happens to others. I had open RNY in March
and the same thing happens to me as well. And honestly the answer below
makes sense. Thanks.

Hey, me too. I had an open RNY, and when I am really full, my nose stuffs
up and starts dripping and/or I have a sneezing fit. Weird.

My family and friends thought I was crazy when I told them my nose runs
when I am full. Like the other posters, I know it is time to quit when my
nose starts running even if I am not feeling full yet.

I had open RNY 2 months and I have that also. It seems I have a runny nose
much more often than before surgery to. In the mornings, during excercise,
after eating. I liked the foamies comment alot because I can certainly
relate to that.

I had an RNY... for me, the running nose is a symptom that I've eaten too
much... beyond full for me...

Not only does my nose and sinuses run but I sneeze when I overeat. Go
figure. It has no where to go so it backs up.

OMG! I can't believe that this happens to other people too. I've been
keeping my mouth shut about this strange phenomenon because I thought I'd
be perceived as a crazy loon! Glad to know that I'm not alone in this.

I used to get a runny nose pre-op every time I ate. Since the surgery ...
nose is as dry as the desert!

It's called gustatory rhinitis and is a reflex that's thought to be caused
by vagal nerve stimulation. When your stomach/pouch "fills up"
and stretches slightly, the vagal nerve is stimulated, and that causes the
runny nose. (A similar thing can happen to normies when they eat spicy
foods.) Gustatory rhinitis seems to be somewhat common among WLS patients
(both DSers and RNYers) in the early post-op months. It often resolves over
time.
