Question:
Was my pain caused from eating too fast or did food get stuck?
Today I was allowed to move on to pureed foods, and my doctor told me pasta was okay. I think I ate it too fast, but I'm not sure. I got this excruciating pain down my back, and felt like I needed to throw up. This lasted for about 10 minutes. Did I eat too fast, and did the food get stuck? I'm new at this, so I'm guessing I just ate too big of bites too quickly...does this type of pain sound normal in that situation? — enoandemily (posted on July 17, 2003)

Much like Jenna I've always had trouble with pasta (except the canned
stuff) - everything from pain to discomfort. I'm learning that I really
don't like the stuff anymore. I'd really suggest steering clear of it
unless it's canned.

Unfortunately, there are things you will not be able to eat post-op. The
only way you will know is to try them. I am 24 mos. out and I can eat rice,
but it makes me throw up. Same with pasta. If I stick to my docs
recommendations, protien and vegies, I maintain my weight no problem. I
hope this helps.

I'm 3 weeks post-op, and I haven't tried pasta or rice yet. I have read
other posts to previous questions, where some people feel that pasta and
rice actually expands in your stomach, which in the cae of a healing small
pouch may be the reason for some discomfort. As a pre-op I was addicted to
all food italian, I love pasta, but I'm cautious because I know that it is
loaded with carbs, and I tended to overeat it all the time pre-op. Good
luck.

Pasta (or breads) are NOT a wise idea post op and certainly not in the
early stages. I'm not into pasta, but I love breads. They sat like a rock
and knotted up my stomach for the first 9 months. You would be wiser to eat
meats, cheeses and other protein sorces, especially as an early post op. It
is my understanding that bread (and probally pasta) EXPAND in your pouch.
So there is the pain you mentioned. If you absolutely THINK you CAN'T live
without it, then only a bite. Wait several minutes and one more bite. Give
you pouch time to handle it.

Yes you probably ate to fast, I do the exact same thing and it to lasts
about 10-15 min. I actually have to throw it up some times. Just take it
slow and chew, chew, chew! Sometimes it a type of food that causes so keep
track of what you ate when it happened!

From what I remember, pasta was the only food that caused that same thing
to happen to me. I learned after about 3 or 4 times trying it that the
pasta made me very ill and it always came back up. So, I just quit eating
it. I am almost 6 months out now but I recently tried to eat pasta again
and did not get sick. So, I think the further out you get the easier things
are to eat. I really had to "baby" my stomach in the beginning,
now not too much bothers me. It's all trial and error. If something makes
you sick every time you eat it, leave it alone for awhile, go back to it
later, like in a month or two, it may be fine for you by then.

For me, eating too fast, taking too big of bites, or not chewing the food
up real fine, causes me to get the pain and need to bring it back up
feeling.
