Question:
Watermelon?????
Could someone please help me? I am 4 months post-op and my weight loss has slowed down drastically. I even gained a lb this week :( Do you think it could be the watermelon? I have gone watermelon crazy, eating at least two LARGE pieces a day. I am just so confused. I don't know at this point if I should be counting calories, carbs or what??? Please, any insight would be great. Thanks! — katia H. (posted on July 6, 2003)

I have been eating watermelon at least twice a day this summer and have not
seen a slow down of my loss or a gain. I have been weighing daily because
i know watermelon can make you gain water weight.

You might just be on a plateau. And how big is big? I eat watermelon but
I don't eat much at a time and only occasionally. Are you getting enough
protein? And your gain could just be a temporary water weight gain - yes,
we still do that. I don't weigh any more often than once a month because I
know I would drive myself nuts worrying otherwise. I follow my eating plan
and trust that I will be ok - so far, 19 months after surgery, it has
worked.

I gain, lose, gain, lose ect... all the time. I weigh daily, so I don't
worry about the fluxuations. I also eat watermelon a LOT! It's mostly
water, so you're just holding onto water, most likely. Don't let it worry
you. The weight will come off!

If you're really craving melon, why not try cantaloupe. It's a
low-carb/low-calorie food.

Watermelon SUGAR is a whole lot different than refined sugar, or sugar you
get from candy or the carbs you'd get from white bread. Watermelon also
has fiber. I've been eating watermelon since the beginning, but not every
single day -- but I've been eating my share -- it hasn't hurt me one bit.
Two cups of watermelon a day is not going to stop or slow your weight loss,
BUT what else are you eating and how much?

Actually, the canteloupe and the watermelon are not that much different
when comparing carbs and cals. 1/2 cup cubed cant. has 29 cals, 6.7 gr.
carbs. For the same amt. of watermelon, 25 cals, and 5.7 gr. carbs. So
really it won't make a difference in which you choose. And although it
contains natural sugar, I have found that I put on the lbs. when I eat more
fruit. I really have to try and cut back, especially at this time of the
year.

I take it you had a RNY...just an FYI, I don't know of too many people who
didn't have a slow down at about 4 months as their body takes a brief rest
to adjust to the weight loss. Relax, don't weigh yourself except at the
doctor's office, and don't worry...you are not going to be the one person
this surgery doesn't work for. Enjoy your watermelon and be patient.

OK, here's a website that explains the difference b/w natural sugar and
refined sugar. www.livrite.com/sugar1.htm Here they explain that refined
sugar is derived from natural sugars, but stripped of its nutritional
value, and the final product is an alien compound that our bodied don't
recognize. And that even natural sugar in excess can cause weight gain.
It IS healthier sugar, but sugar nontheless.
