Question:
Have your dreams come true?
Post Ops: What three goals (or dreams) have you actually attained? In other words, you said to yourself, "when I lose weight I'm going to....". Did you do those things? One of my goals was to get off my B/P meds. (Done!) Another is to be able to run. (working on it). Hoping to give pre-ops some REAL encouragement here - our dreams can come true! Thanks! — koogy (posted on July 5, 2003)

I found I really am not a freak of nature, I do have 2 feet!! LOL I can
walk into any store and pick a size off the shelf and it fits!! (can't shop
at Catherine's or Lane Bryant anymore, clothes are too big), and the
biggest challenge for me...I'm going to Disney in 1 1/2 weeks. I haven't
been on rides in so many years and I intend to ride every single one even
if I'm sick the whole time...Dreams do come true!! Good luck to all!!

I made a list with out 50 "I want to do" list...I've already done
so many of them. One that really "tickles my fancy" I can CROSS
MY LEGS. With easeeeeeeeeee. 2) I wanted to look for something on the rack
that I LIKED, and buy it because I LIKED it, not because it was the only
thing to fit...Also, I (was not on my list) I REALLY enjoy sitting in an
arm chair..without everything hanging off the arms :)

I didnt make a list but i had thoughts in my head of the things I wanted
out of this surgery... my most important thought was my health of course
and that has been a dream come true so far everything is splended and i
couldnt ask for more. everything else just falls into place as i go ...

I was becoming terribly afraid of suffering the awful symptoms, and
eventually dying from, my increasingly difficult to control diabetes. I
had the surgery to improve my health, and all of my goals centered around
that. At three months post-op I am ecstatic to report that all signs of my
diabetes and high blood pressure are gone, my ankles and knees rarely hurt
any more, I can go from my laundry room in the basement to the bedroom
upstairs without stopping to catch my breath, I walk 2 1/2 miles every
morning (and it feeels GOOD--no huffing and puffing), I can cross my legs,
I now weigh less than my driver's license says I do, I can now wear some
clothes where the size starts with a "1", I feel good physically
and mentally (it's not only easier to walk, but easier to laugh!), people
give me compliments all the time, and I enjoy going out in public and doing
all the things "normal" people do without feeling conspicuous.
My guilty pleasure is that I wear the same size as a size-conscious woman
at work does and it's killing her!

I just wanted to feel good and be active without being in pain all the
time. I have my life back and enjoying every minute of it. I am so
thankful for this wonderful surgery and my wonderful surgeon. I am now in
an 8/10 from 22/24, LOVING life!!! The goals are too many to even mention,
but I have accomplished all of them!!

THANKS for answering this post!! I am sooooo looking forward to this
journey. I am not even "pre-op" yet, as I am working on the
referral part. I read postings & profiles all day long - and WOW! what
encouragement. I am 5'4", 265, and have not been able to cross my
legs, OR sit with my legs even together for years! (my stomach always
prefers to sit between my legs, rather than on my lap..lol) I thank
everyone for reminding me why this is such a God-send. My goals (besides
general GREAT health) are #1 Run with my kids all over the park. #2 CROSS
MY LEGS! #3 Be a "newlywed" again without having a HEART ATTACK!
lol. XOXO to everyone! Susan

Susan, excellent post here!! I too have set MANY goals for myself. 1) I
wanted to be able to walk again without the aid of crutches and I am! 2)
I wanted to not ever have to wear a C-Pap machine again for sleep apnea and
now my sleep apnea is GONE! 3) I wanted to ride in an airlplane and NOT
have to ask for a seatbelt extension and I've DONE IT! 4) I wanted to
ride a roller coaster again and as of the 1st of June, I got to do that!
And will be taking my kids and family to Great America this summer too!
There's so many more that I could go on and on, but for Christmas last year
I got to cross my legs and it just came so naturally that I didn't realize
it at first. What's great about that is my fiancee was recording it and
when he saw me do that he turned the camera to me and told me I had crossed
my legs and I started bawling like a baby! It's the simple things in life
that make this journey so great, so all you pre-ops out there......the best
is yet to come! Open RNY 8/20/02 -142 pounds.

Many of my goals have been achieved...and I couldn't be more happy. 1)
Turn around my poor health...diabetes gone (for now) no high blood
pressure...no fatigue...no relentess body pain...no acid reflux. 2)Be
more active...walking briskly now, able to spend the entire day outside and
moving, now waiting for my kid to catch up with me! 3)Fit in...theather
seats now fit, going to the amusement park later this month, fit in lawn
chair/office chairs, buying some clothes off the rack. Other goals remain
1)Find a sweet woman that thinks I'm the greatest :) 2)be able to feel
good about taking my shirt off in public/swimming etc. 3)Continue to lose
weight (on a plateau right now...making some further diet changes).

What a wonderful topic, isn't life wonderful!!!! I can cross my legs, stand
in lines and not get tired, and ache all over. No more rashes, use to hate
summer to come, sweated terrible, and chafed alful. Can now wear short
dresses, instead of covering up in the hot weather, can wear sleeveless
things. Able to get things on sale because the smaller sizes are the ones
left. Getting close to my husband of 42 years, and really hug him!!!! What
a blessing we all have been granted, God Bless you all in your journey,
Susie

How about...wrap a towel all the way around me after a shower! And...sit
cross-legged in my desk chair (without anything falling asleep, too!) and,
lessee, this wasn't a goal per se, but, I walked into a plus-size store and
they didn't have ONE THING in my size...not even bras! Woohoo!

I'm ecstatic that my primary goals have been achieved. (1) I can walk 1-2
miles without pain. (2) My blood pressure is down and I don't require
medication (3) I haven't had an asthma attack in months and my allergies
are no longer an issue in my breathing. (4) I've defeated my craving for
Jolly Rancher Cinnamon. Haven't had one in over a
year.

Other things I have achieved that are nice to haves are (1) I can cross my
legs without something going to sleep; (2) Sleeping isn't so fitful; (3)
Still have some backpain but isn't anywhere near as painful. (4) I can
exercise without pain. (5) I can get real close when I hug my husband.

Good question! I wanted to be out of orthopaedic shoes and to be able to
walk and stand without pain. I am now a runner, and walking and standing
are no problem at all. I wanted to be able to go into my closet and find
it full of clothes I can actually wear, instead of full of stuff that's too
big or too small (mostly, too small). Now, I can wearing everything in
there. And now, I never pass on a social outing anymore just because of my
weight (used to be it was always something: too tired, too far, too
taxing, too small, too much, etc.).
