Question:
Low Carb diet???

Hi! Just curious :) I'm eleven weeks post-op and have already noticed my weight loss has slowed to about a lb a week, uhhh :( Do you think it would be ok to follow a low carb diet (like atkins) to hopefully jump start my weight loss again?    — katia H. (posted on May 18, 2003)

I follow a low-carb (not NO carb) diet 90% of the time. Sure I have my weak moments. Tonight I had a sliver of cheese cake to celebrate a birthday...but mostly I stick to meat and veggies. When I do have starchy carbs I try and stick to whole foods - whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread, etc...and those in VERY limited amounts. The modified version of Atkins that I do is to not count the carbs in good green veggies (including cauliflower) but count the carbs in white, yellow and orange veggies and all fruit. I keep my carb count around 20 a day. 10 months post op and down 150 pounds.

I think that's the preferred diet anyway. Low carb, high protein. I try REALLY hard (but sometimes fail anyway) not to eat white foods, like white bread, white sugar, rice, ect... I stick to 12 grain bread, no potatos, lots of meat and cheese, and salad. So, we are pretty much supposed to eat high protein foods all the time, and isn't that what Atkins is like?? I've never read any of the books, but from what I understand, it's high protein, little carbs. So... I'd think that sticking to Atkins would be a GOOD thing??? I don't count carbs, but I do supplement with protein shakes, eat protein foods first, and steer clear of some things all together. I seem to be rambling, I apologize. I hope I was of SOME help. LOL! :)

We as a family try to follow a low carb diet. I use the books by the Dr,'s Eades and then the Hellers. I love the Eades new cookbook of The Low Carb comfort food cookbook. My husband(who we really do it for) lost 10 lbs in the first month. After 3 days of following this plan he stopped snoring!!!! We're learning to replace the flours we cook with.

A low carb diet is what my surgeon recommends. He told me post-op that the less carbs I ate, the faster I would lose. He was SO right.

Katia, I that is what we'e supposed to do anyway. Not sure if your surgeon or nutritionist (if you saw one) gave you ideas. But generally we're supposed to ALWAYS eat protein first, then your veggies, then if there is room have carbs. Carbs fill you up more, so if you eat them equally with protein, that is less protein and all together less weight lost usually. My surgeon suggests 70% protein, 20% veggie/carbs and 10% fats. It could be your carbs halting your loss, but you're also probably just dealing with a normal plateau, which happens to everyone-whether they eat alot of bread or not. You don't have to completely cut out carbs all together. Everyone has their on way of doing things, for instance, some eat 20carbs in one day (which is basically atkins- but very hard to do) while others will stick to 20 carbs or less per meal. I do more of the latter,(but not necesarily eating carbs at every meal either) just always sticking to the protein first rule and have met my goal weight within a year. Goodluck to you :-)
