Question:
I get constipated once in a while and I was reading that the natural
way to keep things smooth is to take psyllium husks 2X per day. I tried it, but then thought that I better check to see if it is safe for those who have had the RNY. It gets kind of thick, so that was my concern. Any one else here try using it? — Dana B. (posted on May 15, 2003)

HI, I HAD RYN ALMOST 4 MTHS. AGO AND I GET CONSTIPATED EVERY ONCE IN AWHILE
TOO. IT IS BECAUSE OF THE IRON WE ARE TAKING IT MAKES YOU CONSTIPATED AT
TIMES, SO I SUGGEST YOU TAKE A SUPPOSITORY IF YOU GETS UNCOMFORTABLE FOR
YOU, YOU CAN GET THEM AT ANY LOCAL DRUG STORE OR AT WALMART. ANY BRAND
WORKS WELL OR YOUR DOCTOR CAN PRESCRIBE THEM FOR YOU.

I'm always looking for away to make a negative into a positive, if I can.
The iron really does it to me, so I am in the process of creating my own
high fiber, high protein bar. Here's what I have so far: Melt 4 oz of
unsweetened chocolate and 4 tablespoons of butter together, add 7 packets
of Splenda. Put 2 cups of extra fiber All Bran in a bowl, add 6 scoops of
chocolate protein powder and 1/2 cup peanut butter. Mix everything together
and press into a square baking idsh. Refridgerate until firm. Cut into
bars, and calculate carbs, fat, protein and calories based on the
ingredients you have used. (Count sugars and fiber separately!) Wrap bars
individually and store in fridge. So far these taste pretty good, keep
things moving, and they are portable. I am going to try to cut the fat in
these if I can, by using some other liquid, without having them become
soggy. This is adapted from a recipe I can no longer find, but used to make
back when I was doing a low carb diet. Any suggestions for changes would
be welcome!

I too have been challenged with constipation. I have found that if I eat
1/2 cup of Fiber One cereal and take 4 capsules daily of Metimucil with
psyllium my life improves by 100%. Hope this helps.
