Question:
Eating TOOOOOOOO much
One of the 'rare' BUT does happen complications of having an RNY is a 'large stoma'. This condition is the opposite of 'stricture'; IF you have it its NOT something you did or your surgeon.. It just happens. Some of the clues you may have it: No feeling full, not throwing up, eating more than your peers... IF you suspect this... Go to your surgeon and ask for an "Upper GI" test... THIS IS NOT: the same as 'stretching your pouch.... — star . (posted on May 10, 2003)

I don't think not throwing up is always an indication of a large stoma. I
haven't thrown up for years, and I'm 5 months post op. I don't have a large
stoma. All of my insides work as they should. My surgeon told me pre op
that if I followed his plan, I wouldn't throw up at all. He was right! He
said if I EVER started throwing up on a regular basis, there was something
wrong. So far, so good.

Hi, I don't agree with the last post because I threw up constantly and my
surgeon ran all kinds of tests to see why, and everything turned out fine.
He said that some people just go thru that stage being a new post-op and
all.

"Not throwing up - should be 'not throwing up when you eat more".
NORMAL RNY if you over eat you get full - you throw up"

I meant prolonged throwing up for ANY reason should be a cause for concern,
and you should talk to your doctor. Sure, some people do it, but it's a
reason for concern, which is why doctors run tests to find out WHY. Just
because you DON'T throw up, does NOT necessarily mean you have a large
stoma. Just as ALWAYS throwing up doesn't always mean something is wrong.
When I said I followed my doctor's plan and haven't thrown up, that's what
I mean. I don't overeat to the point of throwing up, because I KNOW I'm not
supposed to, and it's unpleasant. If anyone was wondering what I mean,
that's what I meant.
