I'm really starting to think there is something wrong with me. I stop eating because I stop myself, not because I'm full. I can judge on how much I "should" be eating, and stop there. But, just to test this....I ate some soup and thought that I would not stop until I got the full feeling. Well, I ate the whole 10 oz serving of tomato soup. I'm extremely upset over this, as this doesn't seem "normal". Any advice?    — Kim L. (posted on May 7, 2003)

Soup - especially one that is liquid only like tomato soup - will go right through the pouch. I rarely, if ever, eat until fullness. I measure - either actually or in my mind's eye - and then limit myself to that...JR

Hi, again, Kim. I eat ALOT of soup and have the same experience. Today I ate all the "stuff" in the soup and then drank the liquid 30+ minutes later. I was full from the food in the soup, based on a 1-cup soup serving, and the soup was homemade so it was chunky. I definitely noticed a huge difference. Good luck.

That is the very reason I DON'T eat soup. Soup, especially those without meat and vegetables are like liquids - they go right through the pouch. I am 17 months post-op and don't eat soup unless I'm having Chinese food (and then I only eat a few spoonfuls so there's room for food) or unless I'm sick. I did eat broth early out (the first week out of the hospital when I was on full liquids) but I have stayed away from canned soups since then. I do eat homemade chicken vegetable soup in the winter but I eat the meat and a few veggies and leave the broth. I didn't notice how far out you are. It took me a while to feel full.

I bet if you tried to eat 10 ounces of meat, you'd feel full, probably even sick. Soup just slides right through, just like water. I stay away from soup, just for that reason. It doesn't stick with me, and I'm hungry again too soon.

Try that with cottage cheese or THICK hot cereal and let us know if you can eat 10 ounces without being full. If you can, then you should discuss it with your surgeon!
