Question:
I have been in kidney failure in the past and still have protein in my urine?
Past history of kidney failure and still have +2 protein lurking in urine. Afraid the drs won't want to clear me because of all the protein I will need to take in after surgey. Anybody have this problem? HELP? — smmeow (posted on May 3, 2003)

I had open RNY/distal on 8/14/03. I have suffered from chronic kidney
problems from several years. I spoke to my nephrologist about the high
protein intake required by post-WLS people and she said that she had two
other patients who had had WLS and that her usual recommendation is to stay
on the "lower side" of protein intake, such as appx 55-70 grams a
day rather than the 100+ that many post-ops go for. Also, the supplements
seem to be easier on your kidneys than protein from meats, if you can stand
the supplements/shakes. I eat what I want, including carbs from vegetables
and pasta, and limit my sugar intake-just like I've always eaten... now I
just eat MUCH smaller portions. I've lost 122 pounds in 9 months and I no
longer have high blood pressure or high blood sugar, which both, if left
untreated, usually lead to kidney disease... Good luck to you!
