Question:
Has anyone had experience being on an insulin pump and having WLS?
In searching through Q&A and messages, I can't find this issue specifically. I am a Type 1 diabetic (good control) x 36 years and am on insulin pump therapy. I have a consultation with a surgeon set for next week. My PCP and my sis, who is an Internal Medicine physician both have encouraged me to have WLS. I'm looking for anyone who is Type 1 and was on an insulin pump therapy at time of surgery to give me some of their experiences being post-op. Did you have trouble with low blood sugars and if so, how did you treat them since drinking/eating is out of the question. I use Sprite for low blood sugars now. Did you go to the gluco gun for low blood sugars? How was managing insulin? Did you have to make lots of revision to your basal? (Of course, I assume so - but how often?) — Liz R. I'm not on an insulin pump, but I have had Type 1 diabetes for 37 years.
There aren't many Type 1s here, but I do remember hearing from someone who
is on a pump. I had my surgery nearly a year ago. My insulin doses have
decreased quite a bit. I can still use juice or glucose tabs to treat low
blood sugars. I'm going to see if I can find the person who was on a pump.
If I do, I'll email you and let you know who that is. I'm down 120 pounds
and my A1Cs are much improved. My endocrinologist is pleased as punch with
my progress. Feel free to email me.

I am also a type 1 diabetic, but not on a pump. My insulin need has
decreased from about 240 units a day
to 30 units.
