Question:
Has anyone changed careers after having WLS?

I have found that after losing so much weight that my current job as a customer service rep is getting really boring. I mean, I find myself wanting to get up and move around more. As a csr I just sit at my desk the whole workday glued to a head set. I want to be up and moving more. I have a job interview today for a new job that has me up on my feet 90% of the day. I will still be doing clerical work but it will be more standing and walking to different depts to input their work into the computer system. Has anyone else found this to be the case for them?    — gloriafb (posted on April 30, 2003)

Actually my dream job was to be a flight attendant. I was a nurse all my life and decided after my first year of weight loss to "go for it" I did and because of this surgery I achieved a goal I could only dream of when obese. Good Luck to you!

WLS changed my life in so many ways. I remember saying a quick prayer before going to sleep in the O.R. "God please change my life through weight loss surgery!" Well, He must have taken me seriously because EVERYTHING about my life has changed. After having been in real estate management for several years I became the Bariatric Coordinator for a large hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. I also do consultative work for hospitals wanting to start a program or enhance the one they have. I've had the immense pleasure of speaking nationally about surgical weight loss many times. I sometimes feel that I'm more blessed than I deserve to be. Someone once told me there are two great moments in a person's life.....the first is when you are born....the second is when you discover why you were born. I finally know my purpose on earth - to help people find their way to the joy that I've found since WLS. WLS doesn't make life perfect but it give us the opportunity to improve the life we have. I encourage everyone to follow their dreams - the sky is the limit!! Good luck with the new job. You deserve it!

I'll be changing careers. DH and I want to purchase a pet boarding kennel...and I am currently going to school to learn how to groom the dogs...I like making the puppys pretty...after more than 14 yrs as a court reporter, it's time for a change...I'm tired of it...and my faith in humanity is really whittled down to about nothing. Except when I come here. Then it is restored. Have a Sparkling Day!! ~CAE~

I have been a licenced nail tech for about 18 years, It took me 3 years to decide if I wanted to stop and go to something else.(i still keep my licence though). I decided before I had surgery to quit, and was hard because I was at the same salon for 15 years. I had surgery, gained confidence, and decided to become a home health aide. I love working with the elderly especially, and without losing the weight, I would have never dreamed of going back to school. I mean, I would have never even thought of doing it before since taking a CPR class is mandatory, and I would have never been able to bend over the manequin(sp) to learn in the first place...

This would be a great topic for the message board. I hope you post there. The beauty of this surgery it allows you to do what you want to do. If you don't want a career change but want to travel. You can do that. Or as many of us do, you may choose to stay the way you are just be a little better and happier doing it.

Well, I've decided to apply to medical school. I have worked in an office for the last 12 years and I hear you about the sitting behind a desk all day long. I have a degree in Biology and I am studying to take the MCAT this August. With some hope and prayers I will make it into my first choice - UT, Houston. At this point I want to become a family practioner and help monitor patients after their WLS, but who knows, maybe I'll discover a knack for the surgery itself!

Wow what a good question! I have not changed careers as of yet, but Iam definitely thinking of it! I have been a stay at home mom for about 2 1/2 years now after working as a nurse in the nursing home industry for about 7 years. I dont miss it at all and dont want to go back (although I keep up my license just in case). Somehow long hours, being short staffed, and angry families doesnt appeal to me. I am thinking about some kind of job where I can work at home. That way the hours are flexible enough to where I can do things with my kids and actually have the energy to do it.
