Question:
The previous question about alcohol made me think of this.....
When we do drink alcohol...will we get drunk quickly, or not drunk at all? :) — Kim L. (posted on April 19, 2003)

You will get drunk very quickly! A couple of weeks ago my husband and I
went to karaoke at the local Legion hall, I had one glass of white
zinfandel and was smashed! If you have ever watched Andy Griffith Show,
remember the episode called Aunt Bees Medicine Man? I was acting just as
goofy as her when she drank that Indian Elixir!

Hi~ My surgeon told me that *EVERYTHING* will be 3 times stronger than
before surgery, this includes all forms of narcotics, and alcohol so to be
very careful about what you drink or take.

No doubt the alcohol will affect you faster and stronger than it did
pre-op. It's really a personal decision. What I'd suggest is to have a
very small amount of alcohol at home before going out in public and trying
it there. That way you can see how it will affect you and make the
decision with some experience behind it.

You get buzzed quickly, but it wears off quickly too. The nutritionists at
my support group say that drinking alcohol post is 5X tougher on your
liver. I'm not sure what scientific research they have done to back that
up, but I'm taking it into consideration these days and drink very seldom.
Just a thought. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -150

When I first heard that we can get drunk much sooner and on much less
alcohol, I didn't buy it...till I had my first drink post op. I was
slurring my words on one and half glasses of Bailey's Irish Creme. As for
alcohol being worse for our livers now, that doesn't seem to make much
sense. Whether you've had WLS or not, alcohol is immediately absorbed by
the small intestines, reaching the brain within 90 seconds. It is processed
by the body in the same manner, whether we've had WLS or not. It just hits
the brains of posties sooner, because the "plumbing's" been
re-routed.
