Question:
How do you all tolerate fried foods?
Lets say for instance, I fry some french fries and pat off the greese as much as possible. Should I even dare? And how about fried shrimp? :) Pretty much what I'm asking, has any of you attempted the fried foods? — Kim L. (posted on April 19, 2003)

I can eat a couple fry's and fried chicken, but it just does'nt taste good
anymore. I may sample the kids happy meals, but I never eat the stuff as my
own meal.Try it at home first taking small bites just in case you dump.
Good luck!

I have not had any problems with fried food. Of course, I don't eat it too
often, so I haven't had many opportunities to dump on it, but so far it
hasn't made me sick or uncomfortable.

I have sampled off of others meals as far as fried foods, ie. fried
calamari, french fries or chicken fingers, etc.. One or 2 bites don't give
me a problem, but if I eat for instance, approx. half or more of my meal
fried, I get loose bowel movements the next day. Nothing catastrophic,
though. The same happens when I eat steak or hamburger. The thing is,
with steak and hamburger, it doeasn't feel too great going down, so I tend
to avoid them, trying them maybe once every few weeks if the rest of my
family is eating them.

I've tolerated it fine all along, but it lost its appeal somewhere. Some
good hot McD fries, yes, but no one else's. Waste of pouch space. LOL!

I can eat fried foods just fine. The only exception being that at 8 or 9
days post op I got hungry for Long John Silvers deep fried shirmp. That
was'nt a smart move on my end and I paid for it dearly. lol It's rather
funny now, but was'nt then. Anyway after about two months post op I had no
problem with deep fried foods. Thankfully I don't crave it like I did pre
op, but I do eat it when I want.

I can tolerate fried foods fine especially from certain restaurants, I just
don't make a habit of eating them. I am a manager of McDonald's...so the
fries are very tempting sometimes, I find if i just eat one or two then I
am a very happy camper. Also, if you check the nutritional value of some
food like the Chicken nuggets you will find for 4 nuggets there are only 6
grams of fat and about 8 grams of protein. So there is something else to
think about when making fast food choices. Hope maybe this helps.

I can tolerate *some* fatty foods, but too much of it causes me to dump
(not the hypoglycemic part of dumping, but the nausea, dizziness, confusion
part of it)...JR

For the most part, I can not tolerate fried foods. I even dumped on baked
fish sticks. But I can eat 2 sometimes 3 chicken strips from Chick-fil-a
once in a blue moon. If you try it, make sure most of the excess oil is
off and try small amounts. Good luck. Sidney Open RNY 10-23-02 down 80+

Me and fried foods do NOT get along. If I eat any, it has to be very
slowly and then just a little, or I have a lot of pain in my abdomen.
Basically, I'm dumping because it's too much fat.

I hardly ever ate fried foods before my surgery, but now I eat them several
times a week with no ill effects. One of my favorite restaurants has a
fried eggplant dish that I just LOVE. I had the DS, though, so my
experience may not be applicable to you, assuming you had a proximal RNY.
DS surgeons often tell us that "fat is your friend" after
surgery. With very distal bypasses, only a tiny percentage of fat calories
are absorbed, so high-fat foods are an easy way to eat satisfying meals
that won't sabotage your weight loss. If you had a proximal procedure
though, you might need to be more cautious about the calories.

You know, it's kinda funny. Pre-op I just knew I was going to miss fried
stuff more than anything. I LOVED a big hamburger or a chicken fried steak.
Just fry it up in grease and I was ready to eat it. Now the funny thing is,
after doing without all the greasy business for so long, it just doesn't
taste good anymore. It's kinda like sucking on a stick of shortning or
something. You REALLY taste the grease after you have been without it, and
it tastes nasty. I will -very- ocassionally have a french fry or mabey a
piece of fried fish if I have no other options, but I just don't like them
like I used too. I much prefer a cut of lean meat and some fruit or veggies
now.

I ocassionally will eat fried foods. I have a little intestinal irritation
because of the fat. I think thats more a result of not eating fat as much.
However, the biggest reason I don't is because since I had the surgery, I
tried to change the way I eat. It's more important for me to eat health
foods, and to me, fried foods aren't the best thing for me to be putting in
my body! However, if the ocassion comes up and I really want it, then I
will eat it. I'm not setting out to deprive myself if I really want it...
I'm changing my life and my ideas about food. As far as fried shrimp, I
actually ate a couple popcorn shrimp about 7 or 8 weeks post-op and did
fine. Open RNY 10-30-02 down 80 pounds!
