Question:
Has anyone gotten approved on BC/BS TRS insurance?
I am unfamiliar with this insurance has anyone gotten approved and if so was it hard to do and did it take long? — Regina P. (posted on March 20, 2003)

I have BCBS/TRS ACTIVE CARE. They were easy to work with. It took about
three weeks to get approved. There have been eight of us at our school
district that have had the surgery since December 2002.

First I'm going to test and see if it will let me post, as I have answered
your question twice only to hit the "post" button and it tell me
I'm too new to be posting yet!

OK! Now we're cooking! TRS will give you no problems in approving this
surgery if you meet the medical definition of "morbid obesity."
The exclusion in our policy states it must be medically necessary. So, I
assume TRS uses the standard "100 lbs. overweight and BMI over
40" as their definition. If you meet those two criteria, or have a
BMI between 35 and 40 with comorbidities, it shouldn't be a problem. I
don't know anyone with TRS who has been denied for this surgery, but you
can look up insurance information on this website as there are several
people who have used TRS and been approved.
Be aware that TRS will want more than just a predetermination letter from
your surgeon. They asked for a copy of my history and physical, and a copy
of my initial consultation information. If you can convince your surgeon's
office to send this information along with your predetermination letter,
you'll save precious time. Once TRS received this additional information,
my surgeon's office had the approval letter in hand in 8 working days. TRS
staff have answered all my questions professionally and have been very
kind.
Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.
