Question:
I'M FOUR WEEKS OUT, WHAT IS NORMAL?

I'M FOUR WEEKS POST OP TODAY AND HAVE ONLY LOST 21 PDS. IS THIS NORMAL? I STARTED OUT AT 236 AND I'M 5'4. I HAD AN OPEN RNY. I'VE HEARD THAT WHEN YOU DON'T LOSE ANY WEIGHT, YOU'RE STILL LOSING INCHES. IS THIS TRUE? AND ALSO NO MATTER WHAT I EAT, I DON'T GET SICK. I KNOW THIS SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD THING, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE ALMOST EVERYONE HAS HAD SOME SORT OF SENSITIVITY TO FOOD. I DON'T THINK I EAT TO MUCH, I CAN JUST EAT ABOUT ANYTHING. IS THIS NORMAL?    — sandy V. (posted on March 17, 2003)

Hi Sandy- I'm a week ahead of you! You are not alone by any means-- I have not had a problem with any food except turkey jerky (and even that didn't make me throw up, just nausea). I think as long as you are following your MD's post-op food plan, then you should be doing fine. I am assuming that you may be on soft foods or possibly transitioning to solid food by now. Not everyone has food sensitivities, some people dump and some don't. However, I have not tested the waters with any sugar or white carbs (and I don't plan to.)

I'm nine+ months out, and I still have never "hurled" or dumped, either (and I appreciate I was really lucky there!). Just be glad you and your pouch are getting along so well. :~) Twenty-one pounds in four weeks doesn't sound like too little weight loss to me (especially for a so-called "lightweight" -- don't you love that term). And for me, yes, often it was true, if I plateaued on the scale, I was losing inches (or parts of inches, anyway).

Hi, I am 4 weeks out, tomorrow. I have lost 27 pounds. I did start out with a bit more weight, 248. I can eat almost anything, although I haven't tried sugars, raw veggies, major carbs or fats. I haven't thrown up except for once the 2nd week when I tried some mushroom soup from the health food store. I think I drank it too fast. I also worry about having no difficulty with food and about eating more than 2 ozs. at a time, but the weight continues to come off slowly but regularly. My sister, LC on this site, was pretty much the same way. She just hit the 100 lb mark at 8 months. I think we should consider ourselves lucky although I tend to think I don't deserve it. Good luck!!

I had a lap RNY in November 2002. At four weeks I had lost 30 pounds. If you put it into perspective that is a lot of weight to lose in 4 weeks. I am now about 4 months post op and have not gotten sick one time. I also thought that was odd, but every one is different. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I can eat just about anything I want to now. I just can't eat much of it. I have eaten sweets and as long as I keep it to a small amount I am ok. I do not try to push it to the limits. The weight loss as well as all other aspects of the surgery varies from person to person. Just try to put it into perspective. When was the last time you lost 20 some pounds in a month? Just follow your Doctors instructions and you will do fine.

I haven't thrown up once, and I can eat just about anything too. I'm 3 months post op, and I eat salad, any kind of meat, veggies, bread (occasionally), and even sugar in small amounts. I've lost 46lbs, and I feel great!

Sandy, do yourself a favor and track those inches! I'm 25 days post op and have lost 17.5 lbs. The week before last, I lost 4 lbs and 1.38 inches - this past week I only lost 2.5 lbs but lost 2.1 inches! This helps me feel better about my 'slow' weight loss. btw - I'm 5'6" and started at 249. My hubby and I track our neck, biceps, chest, waist, hips, thighs & calves. All I know is that my clothes are getting looser and I'm slowly shrinking. I've also been able to eat just about whatever I've tried so far. Everyone is different so count your blessings :) Best of luck to you!
