Question:
Has anyone had problems with throwing up 4 weeks post op?
On Jan 10, 2003- I had a lap/rny. I have just been released to go back to work. I have been absolutely complication free since my surgery until one week ago. First, I realized that I ate my meal too fast, so I totally slowed down. Now it seems that every other day I throw up sometimes even 2x a day (occasionally just on water). I called my Dr. and they put me on Prevacid 30 mg. This has seemed to help, but there is this just plain ole' nasty taste in my mouth that makes me throw up, tastes similiar to metal (even though i have never tasted metal), just has a metallic taste...has anyone suffered through this? Here I have been complication free and now I must go back to work and have this lil' problem going on! — april-michele D. (posted on February 6, 2003)

April-Michele, I too had the same exact problem. What I found out was I
couldnt tolerate pureed foods, they skeeved me (that was the stage I was
on). Once I switched to solids (and chewed really well!) the throwing up
went away, even from the water. I dont know why or maybe it was just
coincidence but I got through it. It lasted one week total.

I'm soooo with you on this one. I am 7.5 weeks post and I still have
trouble every once in a while. It varies from day to day. One day I'm
fine with whatever I'm eating and the next I'm miserable and on my knees.
I wish I could figure out the pattern - I've been wasting a lot of time in
the bathroom.

I am 14.5 weeks out and I have trouble sometimes, too. It all depends on
what I am eating, where I am, if I'm under stress...It seems that since
surgery stress is bothering my pouch.

YES! When I was one month out I started having a lot of trouble with nausea
and keeping food down. It lasted for two months! Then they found out my
gall bladder was diseased and took it out. From then on I have done better
all the time. Now I never throw up. Get your gall bladder checked.

The metal taste is ketosis (yuck!) and it will pass eventually as you add
more food to your diet. Nausea is also common, and this too shall pass.
It did for me. Keep your doc informed, especially if you throw up so much
that you can't keep water down. This could indicate a stricture or worse,
but some nausea is common.

April-Michele, I threw up the first 4-5 mos. Most of the time it was all
acid like. I can not explain why I would throw up. I did not feel like I
was eating too much, too fast, or not chewing enough. I just look at it
like "hey, you just had major surgery on your stomach and guts...it's
healing!" I have not been sick in 4mos. I feel great!

Hi April, if you are throwing up on just water, it sounds like you might
have a stricture forming. I would call your surgeon and tell them what is
going on and see what they say.

Ooops...I just realized that you already called your dr. Sorry! :o)

I had the same problem. My surgeon said that it was my body readjusting
and it would end as fast as it started - it did! He did put me on Reglan
for nausea, but I couldn't even keep that down! It didn't have to do with
the food I was eating, either - I would get dry heaves on an empty stomach!
This lasted for 3 weeks. Just try to get your water (or anything you can
tolerate) in, so you don't become dehydrated like I did.
