My doctor told me if all the sugar I eat each day is in my vits--just go
ahead and enjoy it.

I am just over 3 months post-op and I have yet to dump. I don't have a
sweet tooth but have tried to push the limits a couple of times to see how
much I could tolerate and still NOTHING. I don't know if thats a blessing
or curse. Really aggravates me because I can also eat chips without any
problem yet I can not tolerate meat, especially chicken. I would much
rather have grilled chicken over most anything else. Everyone is different.
Some people cannot handle sugar even after a year post-op and then there's
those like me. I have recently started drinking orange juice and do just
fine with it (THANKFULLY) though it gives me loose BMs. Some people dump
badly on natural fruit juices and even fruit itself. Its all trial and
error...>As for the vitamins, I take a Flintstone Complete- it doesn't
say how much sugar they have....Good luck!....Karen (lap rny- 9/20/02 and
down 84 pounds!)

I dump on anything over 6 grams in a sitting! Thats not much! But it sure
keeps my eating honest...lol.

every person is different in any of the foods they can tolerate - fats or
sugars - there is no rhyme or reason - very unfortunate for me but I can
tolerate about 22 grams at one sitting. Best advice don't try too much - if
you tolerate it - it makes it so much easier to "cheat" on
unhealthy foods!

Hi,
My Mom made me some turkey salad. Delicious..Until about 3 hours later. I
dumped- horribly..She had put sweet pickle relish and some salad dressing
in it. Very small amount of sugar(about 8 grams total, if full serving
size) I guess I know I can have very little sugar which is probably a good
thing since sweets have always been my weakness..Good luck...

hi....yes, agree with the previous posters. sugar tolerance varies. i can
eat pure sugar out of the bag if i want (and no, i don't and i haven't
tried it--but i bet i could!). over halloween i had halloween candy with
no problem and have had some christmas cookies this year...had birthday
cake on my birthday in november. and yes, i know i should avoid it and for
the most part i do...but then again, i like it and indulge occasionally.

Dumping will (may) occur when you eat too much sugar at one sitting.
Accumulating it over the day won't cause a problem that I know of; Except
that you will consume empty calories. LOL Early on, my tolerance was about
6 grams per sitting. With 8 grams I would dump. The more sugar you eat,
unfortunately, the less effect it has on you. That is, of course assuming
that you dump in the first place. Some don't. BUT the good news is that you
can fix your broken dump-o-meter by avoiding sugar altogether for a few
days. You will likely reset somewhere slightly above your original
"setting." I have gotten to the point where I could eat 25 or 30
grams of sugar at a time. Now I am safe in the 12-15 gram range. It also
depends on the type of sugar. I don't dump on fruit sugar unless I go
REALLY overboard but gooey desserts make me queasy just looking at them.
Yet I can eat a regular size bag of peanut M&M's (on occassion :) with
barely any nausea. Basically, it's trial and error. Just don't try too much
or you won't have any more "error" left to keep you away from the
sweets!

Everyone is different. About 30 percent or so of RNY'ers don't dump at
all, some dump on small amounts of sugar and others can tolerate more. My
surgeon told me that its the liquid sugars that will get ya every time and
he was right. At about 4 months post-op, I tried a Starbucks white
chocolate mocha drink. 4 gulps later, I thought I would die from it! Yet,
I can eat cookies, candy, cake etc without a problem. I try to limit the
grams to under 15 at a time just because otherwise I would get carried
away.
