Question:
How long were you in for open roux-en-y procedure? Just trying to get a sense.
I realize this can vary greatly but I'd like to get a real-life feel for the range. Thanks! — Kate G. (posted on November 25, 2002)

I had open r-n-y last Monday, Nov. 18th. I went in that AM. I was
discharged on Thursday, Nov. 21. That's about the usual for my surgeon,
anyway. Complications, of course, may change that a lot! I'm not sure if
there's an "average" length of stay, surgeons seem to vary so
much in so many things! Susan

My surgery is scheduled for Dec.11, but my girlfriend had hers done on
Sept. 23, and it took 5 hours. However, she had the lap procedure done
first, and then due to a leak, was opened back up. Her hospital stay was
only 3 days though. I have heard anywhere from 1 1/2 hrs to 5-6 hrs,
depending on lap vs. open, and any complications. Good luck on your
research!

Hi there, I know my procedure was not the usual, but because of a couple of
complications, my open RNY took about 5 1/2 hours! I was also in from a
Monday to Sunday. But things are alot better and no more problems.

My open RNY took a little under 2 hours. I went to sleep at 10:10am (I
remember looking at the clock), and was back in my room at 1pm. The nurses
said I was in recovery for about an hour. My surgery was a Monday, was let
go on Saturday morning, with no complications. Hugs, Kim S. Open RNY Nov.

For the original, about 2 hrs in surgery, 4 days (2 in ICU because of
cormorbs, not the surgery). For the revision, still about 2 hrs, 3 days,
no ICU. It should have been many more hours, I'd have thought. WLS #1 was
my 4th intraabdominal surgery & revision was #5. I should have been
totally a gluey mass of adhesions. My surgeries were both uneventful.
