Question:
Can dumping be differnent depending on what eaten?
I honestly don't know if this is dumping or not. I have in the past done the pale, sweaty shaky dumping on fat, butthisis different. I am having really sharp pain in my side about twenty or so minutes after eating (in this case a couple of cinnamon graham crackers) and then it lasts about 20 minutes or so. I am wondering if it is a sugar thing? In the past I have been able to handle some sugar..orange juice and the like. This is new. FYI I am 1 year out, down 135 and have had my gall bladder out if any of tht makes a difference. Thanks. — DH D. (posted on October 29, 2002)

I'm 15 months out and down 135+ lbs as well. I know I personaly dump
differently on different things. Also, I dump differently on the same
things as well (makes sense huh?). Sometimes I will be fine eating
something and another time I will dump. I just returned from a 6 night
cruise and found that I dumped a lot more than I thought I was capable of
this far out. I guess I'd gotten into such a routine with "safe"
foods that I thought I didn't dump anymore, then when I stepped outside of
the safe zone (lol) I didn't fend very well (Thank God). I usually get hot
and shakey, and get a belly ache, sometimes I vomit as well...a new thing
is diarreh(sp). Also, I find if I've recently had trouble with a few new
things close together, my system becomes "sensative" and I dump
on things I normally could tolerate. Strange but true. Hope this is
helpful. -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -136

Hi there...let me tell you my experience with dumping. I love juices and
even though I bought the 100% grape juice and even though I diluted it
(maybe not enough) I thought I was dying in about an hour. I had abdominal
cramps, chills, and diareahea (sp). On the juice it lasted several hours.
The other time I had poured myself about 3 oz. of my protein drink and
drank it down. For about 6 hours I went through the same syptoms -
cramping, chills and diareahea. Lord have mercy!!!! No more protein
drinks for a while - I found a protein powder I can sprinkle in or on foods
and drinks - it has no taste and its been my lifesaver. Of course, I am
only 2 weeks post-op so I'm sure I have more dumping experiences to
experience. Sheesh!!! My doctor allowed me to start on solid foods after
the first week. I would add a new food each meal. So far I have been very
lucky except for chicken.....the chiken came right back up - thank goodness
because it felt stuck and I was miserable. I'm doing great with water and
to date I have lost 28 lbs. I still suffer from lack of energy but that's
my fault for not getting out and doing my walking. I'm so bad!! :)

for the one who dumped on the protein drink...what did you mix it with? if
you mixed it with any kind of MILK, you may have dumped on that...I did in
the very beginning and still can't drink milk. Try it with water. ALSO
check that the protein mix you were using doesn't contain too much sugar
per serving.
