Question:
Am I losing too fast?

I never thought this would be a concern of mine, but I am getting a little worried. I began at 321 pounds and after just over 5 weeks post-op, I am down 56 pounds. I admit, I'm not eating like I should be. I have been having this annoying problem where it feels like there is a "bubble" between my breasts and after a while (like an hour or so), I throw up whatever I ate, on purpose because I can't stand the discomfort anymore. The food isn't stuck, I know what that feels like. When I questioned my surgeon about it, he said its normal. I was wondering if maybe I was getting air bubbles in there. At this point, I hate eating and I am sure I'm not eating enough. Daily, I try to get in 4 or 5 bites of yogurt, a couple of cubes of cheddar or mozzerella cheese, half of a piece of sandwhich-size ham or turkey, and a few bites of fresh apple or applesauce. I am supposed to still be on pureed, but I just can't do that. I do chew til there is virtually nothing left in my mouth though. I definitely get in enough water (and then some) and I do take my vitamins. I saw my surgeon a week ago today and I had lost 46 pounds then. Now a loss of 10 pounds since then? Does it sound like a lose of 56 pounds is too much at this point or am I on track? HELP!    — karmiausnic (posted on October 28, 2002)

Hi Karen - I had the same concerns as you when I had mine done. I lost 25 pounds the first week and a total of 51 pounds in the first 4 weeks. I'm at my 6 month anniversary in 2 days and I'm down about 130 pounds and am feeling great. As long as you are doing what your doctor told you to and are feeling OK just enjoy the ride! Congrats on your loss!! - Mike

Original poster here- Kathy, my surgeon tells us that we can eat meats (as long as they are pureed or chewed extremely well) as soon as we leave the hospital. I would love to try french toast, but I fear it will be too doughie and sit in my pouch like a rock. Not to mention that I am supposed to stay away from the carbs for a while. I don't have a problem with the apples, but I have with bananas. Now this evening, I even get discomfort from water. I haven't had this problem until today. Its that bubble type feeling. Ugh! I hate this! Thanks for the responses!!

The "bubble-like" feeling you describe does sound like it could be gas. Are you eating slowly? Are you drinking water through a straw? My surgeon advised against straws as it can produce gas. He also insisted that meals take at least 30 minutes to finish (for the first year at least). Your weight loss sounds great but you need to be sure to get your protein in, if not through food then through protein drinks or bars.

We started out at about the same weight. Personally it does seem alittle to fast.

I started out at 346 and lost 30 pounds the first 12 days; at 10 weeks I had lost 66. So you are losing a little faster than I was but by 5 weeks, I was eating grilled meat and not having any problems.

Congrat's on your weight loss.. As for the bubble feeling between your breasts, I get the same thing & was wondering what it was too. I do not drink with a straw & I am 2 weeks post op.. If you find out what is is let me knwo.. I also get a pain under my left breast... Oh well... Anne

Karen--you are doing great!!! You will lose very quickly at first and being only 5 weeks out you wont be able to eat a whole lot. I was only getting 500-700 calories for the first couple of months but I tried to get the protein in first and the water second. As for that feeling and having to throw up--I struggled with throwing up quite a bit between my 2nd and 4th month and I felt that was due to eating too fast. The food just "sat" there and I knew if I threw it up I would stop feeling so horrible which was true so I slowed down, chewed even more and have been ok since. Hope this helps! God Bless. :o)

Sharon, I am 15 weeks out and down 80lbs...I too have a hard time getting in what I am supposed to..it seems like some days I have a better appetite than others...I wasn't on pureed foods at your stage, my Dr. had me on a soft food diet..i.e., chicken, tuna, etc. I had a total loss of appetite at the beginning as well, but as I just said, I still battle that daily...you will adjust, I do worry myself about getting in enough vitamins, protein with food, but I try my best..that's all you can do. I wish you the best of luck!

Congrats on your loss! I am going on my 7th week and I have lost 61 lbs. I am not getting in the protein I am supposed to either. I have a hard time eating at all some days. And when I do I don't feel well sometimes. My understanding is this is pretty normal(your doc said so hisself) I'm worried about losing my hair personally!! Hang in there lady!!

Karen,You might try GasX or something like that. I have to take it 2 times a day to help with the feeling of air in my stomach. It won't hurt you if that's not the problem either.
