Question:
Over 2 years post-op RNY, suffer from bad smelling gas???

Both myself and my mother are over 2 years post op and have problems with REALLY smelly gas (never had anything this smelly before surgery). We tried to weed out the problem - -- certain sugars, etc., but we really can't seem to figure this out. I've also noticed the gas is always worse the week before my period. Has anyone else had this experience? (regarding prementrual). What tips do you have for stopping the smelly gas?    — Karen S. (posted on October 4, 2002)

i heard taking the product called bean o helps with this problem. it has an enzyme the intestines are lacking. it can be taken as many times a day the bottle says but up to three times the amount it says.

I am 21 mos. post-op (RNY open) and I have had smelly gas ever since the operation. Tonight I had pinto beans and it smelled exactly like pinto beans. Certain things I eat makes the gas smell even worse. Gas escapes, both silently and/or loudly, without any warning, which is really awful in public and at work. I guess this just comes with the operation.

My mother had WLS 25+ years ago and suffered with this problem the whole time. She took it well, it was a family joke for years and years. We were an interesting family : ). Anyhow, when I started researching my WLS she contactd one of the WLS docs and asked if she could just sit and talk with them about some of her issues. This being one of them. He suggested taking Metamusil (sp) everyday. Since then, she has not had a problem. She is just shocked that she suffered so many years and the solution was so easy. Give it a try, it may help.

My doc says its a imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the large intestine and can be fixed with Antibiotics. I also have heard that folks can regulate with yogurt or daily consumption of Chlorophil tablets(Sp?). Which does not end the gas but takes the smell away. For me this is my greatest fear of the operation ( I am scheduled Dec 3) Please let me know what works for you.
