Question:
Is it possible to breast-feed after WLS?
OK, although I am DYING to get pregnant at only 4 months post, I am waiting, but pacifying myself by doing research on the whole subject. I know pregnancy in itself will be difficult to get in all the nutrition, but how about breastfeeding? I have one daughter and didn't breastfeed and know I want to try with the next. Is that possible? — emilyfink (posted on September 30, 2002)

Absolutely, yes! My daughter had her lap RNY in January, 2000, and lost
210 lbs. Three months ago, she gave birth to her first
child.....completely normal and uneventful pregnancy....and breastfed
without any problems. From the beginning, her bariatric surgeon and
obstetrician were very supportive and enthusiastic about this pregnancy and
her wonderful state of health since her weight loss. The only
recommendation made by her surgeon was that she double her daily prenatal
vitamins and have her labs drawn every two months during the pregnancy.
Her labs were actually better at the end of the pregnancy than before :-)
Best wishes to you!

Yes, it's completely possible, lots of us have done it, including me. My
daughter was 21 months old at the time of my RNY and continued to nurse for
five months after my surgery, including nursing a few times while I was in
the hospital and picking up with a vengeance when I got home!
<p>There's a Yahoo! group specifically for this issue. It's a quiet
group but you'll get good advice there from the archives and over time.
It's called ossg-breastfeeding, and you can find it by going to
groups.yahoo.com and searching for it. There's also a group called
ossg-pregnant that you will probably find helpful. Good luck!
