Question:
I can't take pennicillin, and Doc just prescribed Cipro pills
..that are too bitter to get down when crushed. Any ideas of what I can take for a bladder infection? Anything that is small or liquid alternative to pennicillin so I can suggest it to my family physician. — Darlene P. (posted on September 11, 2002)

I get bladder infections like most people get up and go to work! I'm
allergic to pennicillin so I'm usually given Cipro or Levaquin. I've also
been given Bactrim and another sulpha based antibiotic, I can't remember
the name. The type of antibiotic prescribed to you really depends on the
type of bacteria they find. Certain bacterias are immune to some types of
antibiotics. I didn't read your profile so I don't know if you're post WLS
and if you are, I don't know how far out our are. At about 6 weeks post
op, I developed a kidney stone infection and was given Cipro, I got the
okay to take it w/out having to crush it. I would really just tell your
doctor what your concerns are, they would definately know what your
alternatives are, especially since there are SO MANY antibiotics on the
market. Good luck to you!

Cipro is available in a liquid form and doesnt taste too bad. It is a very
Broad Spectrum Antibiotic so it can be used for alot of different types of
infections.

At 6 weeks out I was able to take regular pills. Be sure and ask your dr.
It will probably be ok to take them as pills--and lots more pleasant! =)
