I'm 44 this coming Friday and I had bi-lateral PE's in January that I was
hospitalized for. I am now on Coumadin for the rest of my life. I had my
WLS on 7/17. My PCP stopped my Coumadin 5 days before surgery and they
started it again about a week after surgery. If the surgeon knows of your
history of PE, he'll be extra careful with you. It's the people with no
history of PE that seem to be the problem... So, just make sure that when
you have your initial consult that you inform the surgeon of your history
of PE and the fact that you are on Coumadin.

I had a pulmonary embolism in September of last year. I was also put on
blood thinners for 6 months, but I continued to pursue my consultations for
WLS. I saw two surgeons, one in late September of last year and another
this past February. The second surgeon, upon finding out about my P.E.,
told me that he would only do my surgery if I had a vena cava filter
inserted. This device will prevent any blood clots that may form from
getting into your lungs. I have since had my surgery. I was off the blood
thinner by the time I had my surgery, but I also had the filter. I had my
surgery on 4/1/02, and have lost a total of 155 pounds so far! Don't let
the P.E. stop you from pursuing WLS, if that is what you want to do.
P.E.'s are a big risk factor with this surgery, especially if you have a
history. Ask your doctor about the vena cava filter as an optional
precaution.
