Question:
Do allergies improve post-op??
I developed asthma and allergies(seasonal and pets about 3 yrs ago). Before that I never had either.I have read that weight loss improves asthma greatly, but can it also help allergies?? — kim M. (posted on August 8, 2002)

Asthma improves because a MO has lots of fat in their body cavity. This
acts like a corset around the lungs preventing them from expanding. This
explnation from my wifes pulmonologist. Her asthma is GONE!<P> My
allerigies are much better. This is the first summer in at least 15 years
that I wasnt miserable... Runny nose caused GERD, and persistent cough and
infection requiring anti biotics. ALL much better this year although I
still have a slightly runny nose.

You know, I never thought about it, but last week I threw out the allegra
and 2 bottles of claritin that were takin' up space in my med drawer cause
I never had to use them once this year!! My allergies were so bad last year
I got a post op pneumonia from my cough. Hey I'll give WLS the credit!!
Everything healthwise is better for me today =)

I was on a constant dose of allegra preop. BOth morning and night time.
Since about 3-4 months after surgery, I am not only off of my asthma meds,
but I only take the allegra on an as needed basis. And I have only needed
them 2-3 times since then.

ASthma, poof, gone by my first monthly visit. But in reality, my asthma
was well controlled with my non-steroidal inhaler, so I was a lightweight
with it.

It's funny you should mention it...pre-op, every morning I would wake up
with lots of mucus and the like, and post-op, I haven't had nearly as much
trouble. My main allergy is ragweed, but I'm allergic to pretty much
everything. I was very surprised to find this happening to me --
especially because I love the outdoors, and it has made my morning walks
bearable. Ragweed season is upon us, and I'm only using one med, not the
Zyrtec I'm supposed to be taking. So there you have it!
