Question:
What can I do for leg pains

My RNY was 9 weeks ago, I'm down almost 80 lbs. and thrilled to death but my legs are klling me. They hurt so bad at night that my sleep is interrupted several times. I can't tolerate the liquid potassium so is there anything else I could try. Please help if at all possible. Thanks. [email protected]    — kysunshine (posted on July 26, 2002)

I am 6 months down and I have started having HORRIBLE leg cramps that wake me up in the middle of the night...and I have only changed ONE thing about my diet...I quit eating bananas. They are a great source of protein and fruit is a "good" carb. Try them in your protein shake or straight from the peel. You also might call your doctor because if your potassium gets too low you can damage your heart.

Bananas are good, but orange juice also has lots of potassium. I buy the stuff with calcium in it too so I can justify the caloric liquid. ;) Maybe you could make a shake with bananas AND orange juice and REALLY load up! I had problems with leg cramps a few weeks ago, too. OUCH! Oh, and lite salt has potassium, too.

My potassium was low at my 6 month visit and my PCP prescribed potassium pills twice a day. I took them for a month and then changed taking my prenatal vitamins and iron pills from every other day to every day and my potassium came back normal. I no longer have to take the potassium pills but while on them they worked great.

Sorry, I didn't proof read my last post...bananas are a good source of POTASSIUM, not protein, lol. Oops!

Edna, I see everyone here is suggesting potassium. How is your calcium intake? My mom (tho not a WLS patient) used to cure her leg cramps with extra calcium. Maybe this will help! Hugs,
