Question:
8 weeks post-op, wanting rice
At 8 weeks is it okay to eat long grain or wild rice. I haven't had rice since April. I love baked chicken with rice as a side dish. Anyone out there have an answer.I'm minus 65 lbs. and doing great with every side of the WLS. Thanks — kysunshine (posted on July 13, 2002)

You can have rice, I eat it with no problem, I do not eat it to often due
to the carbs, Some people have said they have problems with it sitting in
their pouch like a big ball, but I have not experienced that.
As with any food other than protein, moderation is the rule to follow.

I would be very careful. Not to eat much until I know how it would effect
me. My friend Debra can't eat it at all.

When trying ANY NEW FOOD post op, try only a bite or two and quit. If you
can tolerate it, you can try eating more later.

Hi, I don't know what your doc's after-care plan includes, but mine does
not allow starches of any kind until all my excess weight is gone. SO I am
always looking for "legal" substitutes.
I used to eat a lot of rice. Here's what I do instead. Of course, I eat
my protien FIRST. On occasion I take some fresh cauliflower, rinse and
finely chop and then quick blanch it in chicken broth then drain in a
colander. Don't over cook it. Blanch for only about 2 minutes in boiling
broth. While hot I season it just like I did my rice, with salt, pepper
and a dab of real butter. You can also add a bit of soy sauce or just get
creative and use it as a base for just about any kind of stir fries protein
and veggis combo. Yum.

As a new post op, rice was one of the few things that I could not tolerate.
It always came back up. Pastas and breads were just fine. Now 8 months
post-op I can eat rice with no problems. Like the others said, start with
just a couple bites and stop.

For me at nearly eight months out rice is a NO NO! I just can't do it. It
hurts so bad when I eat it. Try just a little and know your limits. Some
of us can handle it while others of us can't. Good luck.

7 YEARS before I tolerated rice. For the last year, everything is served
with RICE! LOL! I use basmati rice, Tastes good, doesn't hang up. BUT as
a rookie, try ONE bite, chew the daylights out of it, put your fork down
& WAIT. See how it goes. One bite at a time.

As you can see, the experience is different for everyone. I'm 5 weeks out,
and I've been able to eat ALL sorts of things...as long as I chew the
$%#*& out of it. :) Actually, I found rice to go down quite easily --
but like I said, I CHEW CHEW CHEW -- my doc says take 30-45 min to eat -- I
easily take an hour. (But I was always a slow eater anyway, lol.) I agree
with the "take a small bite, chew chew chew and chew again, and wait a
while to see" approach...it's worked for me. I'm currently VERY into
peanut butter. :)

I am 7 weeks post-op and when I saw my doctor last week, he saw on my food
journal that I had eaten rice. He said that there is absolutely NOTHING
wrong with eating rice; however, you MUST eat protein first and then nibble
on the rice. I can usually eat about 2 TLBS after eating chicken or beef
(usually stir-fry). I would suggest though that you try wild rice or brown
rice versus white rice just for the nutritional value. If you have
problems after trying the rice, simply lay off of it for a while and try
again later. It is definitely trial and error!
