Question:
Do you count the calories, carbs, and protein of foods you have thrown up?
Does it depend on how long after you eat foods that you throw them up if you count their calories, carbs, and protein towards your daily intake? Or are they disregaured no matter how long or short they are in your tummy? — Shannon L. (posted on July 7, 2002)

It's my understanding that there is NO absorption (pre and post-op) in the
stomach. Any and all absorption takes place in the intestines. I don't see
how you could "count" anything from food you throw up. Hope that
helps.

Actually there is absorbtion of glucose. Glucose (sugar and simple carbs)
can even be absorbed in the mouth without swallowing.
Preop, the bottom half of your stomach also absorbs B12. That is why many
RNY patients take sublingual B vitamins.
However for the purpose of counting calories and protien, you probably
don't have to count anything as absorbed unless it was a Krispy Kreme you
threw up <grin>.
