Question:
I have a rounded hump at the top of my back where my neck meets my back

I thought this was just because I'm heavy and that it was just fat. I've lost 78lbs and it hasn't gotten any smaller so I'm starting to wonder if it's not something else. Anyone else have this?    — Alison N. (posted on June 25, 2002)

Alison- I also have this same thing. I haven't had my surgery yet so I don't know what will happen when I start losing. I've been going to a chiropractor for the last 2 1/2 years for neck and back problems. I did notice that it has gotten smaller since I've been going for my adjustments. My doctor thinks that part of the problem was my poor posture not necessarily due to the weight but because of my type of job. I work in an office at a computer for most of the day so I know my posture is not the greatest. I'm not saying that this is the answer for you necessarily but it is something to consider. Also-I just remembered....my mother has the same thing. She's not nearly as big as I am but she has had the "hump back" area for years. Could just be genetic too. You never know.

I have the same thing on the nape of my neck, it has gotten much smaller since I have lost over 75 pounds, My mom had the same thing , she told me it is called a Widows Hump!! don't ask me why, but mine is steadily going away with my weight loss, I'm sure yours will too, my pcp told me A while back that it was a Fat Globule, basicly from being obese..

It is also part of having poor posture. I know that when I make a conscious effort to not slump and sit up straight...it is not as pronounced.

I have one as well. It's a bit to the right of center. my surgeon says it is a lipoma..an accumulation of fat. It's not a serious thing but if it gets annoying I should have it removed. He said it could POSSIBLY get a bit smaller as I start losing weight. HAVE ALL LUMPS CHECKED.

I have one too and I was told, like someelse, that it is called a widow's hump. I have always had it and it really used to bother me in school during tumbling as that is right where you land with summersalts, etc. Mine has gotten a lot smaller since my surgery but I'm sure it will never be totally gone.

I have a lump on the back of my neck too. I am pre-op so maybe it will go away. I can really feel it if I have been typing on the computer for long periods of time or having an especially stressful time. I did go to a masage therapist, and it worked to relieve some of the lump for a couple of days, but it came right back. It is a horrible thing to have this, and I am sorry you have to go thru this pain. Check with your doctor to see if you are able to use "Tiger Balm" This is an over the counter medicine that is found in some better pharmacies. It works for me, but please ask your doctor before you try it. Take Care!-Mary Western Pre-op 284lbs 43BMI surgery date 7/8/02

I had one too. I'm just a few lbs away from goal now (3-10, depending on which goal I'm going by, lol) and it has completely disappeared :)

I used to have the lump too. I started lifting weights a lot. Way more than the average person and I lifted much more- I got into powerlifting and the lump went away- I also lost a lot of weight. I havent done it for almost 4 years and I have gained back all the weight I lost (it figures) but the lump is still gone and the weight I have regained has 'packed on' differntly than before...so you can get rid of it, lose weight and pick up the weights.
