Question:
How are WLS members withType 1 Diabetes handling
I have questioned in your database but found only one T. 1 Diabetic answering a question. I'd also like to know how much,if any, insulin people take post-op. I am scheduled 7/8/02. — Kathe G. (posted on June 23, 2002)

I was diagnosed with diabetes and have taken insulin for 26 years. Though
I will always be on insulin my needs have greatly reduced. I take a new
insulin called "Lantus", at night, which lowers my base sugar
level for 24 hours. Than I work on a sliding scale, using Humalog to keep
it in tight control during the day. I still have to check my blood 4 times
a day but I only had surgery 5 weeks ago. I hope to get to a point where I
only have to check it am and pm. This surgery has saved my life.

I am also a type I diabetic for the past 10 years. I take my blood sugar 4
times a day along with four shots. I had surgery on Nov. 8th, 2001 and
have lost 88 lbs. Prior to surgery I was taking 70+ units of insulin a
day. Now, I take approx. 20-30 units a day. So, needless to say, it alot
less insulin. I still struggle with my blood sugars though. I take
Humalog on a sliding scale and Lantus at HS. Any further questions, please
let me know. I would be happy to answer them. Good luck!!!
