Question:
Can someone give me a list of pre-op tests you had to undergo?
Should have a surgery date by the end of the week! I know my surgeon will tell me this info, but I wanted to get some lists from various patients as to what pre-op tests you had to have prior to WLS. Thanks everyone for your support! — emilyfink (posted on May 1, 2002)

Mine were done on Monday 4-29-02 and they were very simple a EKG, some very
basic blood work and then I just had to answer a series of questions (meds,
problems with anesthesia, smoke, drink etc.). The most complicated thing
was the wait. Good luck! Don't Worry!

Bloodwork (iron had to be w/in norm. range for surgery), EKG, chest x-ray,
gallbladder ultrasound, nutrition eval, psych eval, and a pap within 1 year
of surgery. My sugeon requires the pap, it seems unrelated, but there is a
lady in our group that had hers done and found out she had some kind of
cancer in the reproductive region which was caught before surgery. She
then had that taken care of first before the RNY. She was bummed for
having to wait for a longer period of time, but thankful that it was
caught. Oh, and I had to go back for fasting labs because something was up
with my triglycerides and glucose.

Hi Emily. My surgeon required blood work, EKG, Dibutamine Stress Echo,
endoscopy, chest x-ray, arterial blood gas, and lung testing. If you are
interested, I have put the details about them on my website. The address
is www.geocities.com/jaxsites/christie (Click on pre-op and then
pre-testing details). Good luck with everything!

Hi Emily! Besides the required psych eval and dietitian eval by my
insurance company, my pre-op testing consisted of a GB ultrasound (they
also did my liver, spleen and kidneys), upper GI, chest X-ray, history
& physical, EKG, blood work and urinalysis. Good luck to you and best
wishes for a speedy recovery.

Hi...I had to go to a cardiologist to have a stress test, EKG, had to go to
a pulmonary specialists that did all types of breathing tests, a
nutritionist, an endocrinologist, a psychological evaluation and they
recommended a physical - it wasn't necessary, but recommended so I did it
anyway. Its more of a pain trying to get an appointment and then waiting
for everything to be sent to the doctor.

I only had to have two things done: an Upper GI and a gall bladder
ultrasound. No bloodwork, ekg, chest x-ray, etc... It was very easy. I'm
sure this was based on my uncomplicated medical history. Shelley

Chest x-ray, urinalysis, EKG, bleeding time, arterial blood gases and
bloodwork. They also had the nurse do a mini physical on me at the same
time. I didn't have any medical conditions or problems.

Hi Emily! Here's what I had to do for my Lap RNY: Had a lot of blood work
taken from my arm and then from my wrist. Also took a urine sample; EKG;
Chest X-rays; Upper GI - very yucky; Gall bladder ultrasound; Met with the
anesthesiologist; Met with the nutrionist; Met with the respiratory
therapist - he gave me a breathing tube to practice with and that had to
come with me to the hospital. You will be fine!!! I am now 8 weeks post-op
and have lost 30# going down slowly, but going down!! God Bless, Good luck
and lots of hugs! Sandi

Hi Emily. I had the same tests as Sandra, plus an endoscope, which was
required and a colonoscopy which I had on my own for added peace of mind.
By the way, you'll hear horror stories about the blood gas and I was a
total nervous wreck but it was a breeze. I didn't even feel it. The lady
who did mine knew her stuff. Best wishes to you as you travel on your
journey to a healthier lifestyle.
