Question:
Am I average with my weight loss?
I had surgery on Dec 10,2001. I started at approx. 360 and as of today I am down 53 pounds. I am 5'6" tall and was hoping I would have lost more by now. I have had no problems of any kind with food or drink. I have just recently begun to add more veggies to my diet usually a salad with cheese or chicken chopped up in it for protein. As far as exercise I walk every day when the weather permits and I have began lite weight training. Am I "average" ? — janicediana (posted on March 22, 2002)

I don't know what "average" is. I can tell you that I had
surgery 2 days after you and am at a 72 lb. loss. I am 5'7" and
started at 290 lbs.

Diane, I had my surgery on Dec. 10 as well. I have lost approximately 55
pounds or so, I'm not sure since my scale is not always accurate. I started
out at 261 at the time of surgery. I think the difference is that you are
doing more in the muscle building area such as weight training. I am pretty
much still just walking. As we see here all of the time, muscle weighs more
than fat. It also looks better, so there is an upside. Are you losing
inches? Try to keep track of more than one indicator of success. The
numbers on the scale are tempting to look at, but also consider the inches,
the clothing sizes and most important how YOU are feeling. I think you are
doing great, keep it up! PS...Can you belive its been almost FOUR
months!!!????

Hi Diane,
My surgery was Dec. 17 and I, too, started out at 360 lbs. I am down
68 lbs. I am 5'7" tall and 57 years old. We have a group of all the
people who had surgery the same day, and the losses vary
greatly.(43-80lbs.) I had a 5 lb. regain so gave up eating crackers and
pretzels. Whether it was the salt, carbs or coincidence, I lost those 5
and 6 more lbs. within 10 days. We are so fortunate to have been able to
have surgery and lose weight! To you, my 68 lbs. sounds great, but to me,
the other girls 80 lbs. does. If we compare, we'll make this journey
difficult instead of enjoying every second of our losses. You're doing
great!

I also had surgery on 12/10/01, as of today I have lost 79 lbs. I started
at 464 and 5'7",so I started out at a higher weight, my surgeon thinks
I am doing well.Your doing GREAT any weight lose is good. The nutritionist
told us the other day that after 2-3 months postop they want patients to
lose only 2 lbs per week, or we will lose too much muscle.

I had surgery 12/4/01 and have lost about 50 pounds. My starting weight
was 298 and I'm 5' 7". I'm 44 years old. I'm not exercising (where do
you people find the time? I'm a single Mom, and after working all day, I'm
busy every evening and weekend, doing chores and running my kids all over
the place). I do believe our weight loss is "average". Those
lucky people who lose 100 pounds at 6 months, truly are the exceptions.
