Question:
RNY with or without a Fobi ring?
What are surgeons saying about the usage of the Fobi ring? I know the reasons the Fobi ring is preferred by some surgeons. I would like to know what your surgeon said that made you not decide to have the Fobi ring. — blong (posted on February 10, 2002)

My original RNY was issued without any ring. When my staple line disrupted,
I had choices again and more education by then. I had seen many rings
erode by that time and have to be surgically removed. While I liked the
THEORY of the ring, I did not choose one for myself, because of the body's
strong desire to normalize. I figured if it had disrupted the staple line,
my chances were pretty high that it would reject, eject or try to absorb a
ring. So, I elected not to do it. NOW I find out that one of my docs has
developed a new technique to help the stoma NOT constrict and it also works
to help it NOT stretch. So, I am hoping that no more mechanical failures
will occur.

My surgeon put a "Fobi ring" around my exit hole from the new
stomach restricting it to about the size of an M&M. He, however, made
this out of my own "gristle" as he called it. I doubt my body
would react adversely to this. It's been almost 2 years since my surgery
and I've done very well.
