Question:
Has anyone taken metabolife or a similar product to increase metabolism after surgery

has anyone been told that they could not take it, that it would cause complications?    — [Anonymous] (posted on January 27, 2002)

No offense or anything, but why would you want to use a product that's not even approved by the FDA, that didn't work before? You've invested a lot in your surgery. Why mess it up with some shady prodcut that has no scientific evidence to back up it's claims? Just my two cents. Be patient, follow your doctors instructions and the surgery will work on it's own. Excercise and following your eating plan will help your metabolism. And that IS scientifcally proven. In fact if you eat six small meals a day that can increase your metabolism a lot! Please don't risk anything on this product. Good Luck!

Did you try it pre op and , did it work? I think if it worked none of us would have had surgery. In any case read the label and make sure it dose not contain anything harmful if you are going to take it. Myself with a thyroid condition I must be careful that a product dose not increase my heart rate. Personally I would set the money aside , not buy the product and get my nails done or an eyebrow arch.

I hate to say it but yes I did. I was dropping the pounds at a rapid rate. I had lost 180 lbs. in 7 months and all of a sudden the weight stopped coming off. I paniced and took metabolife. after 2 weeks the weight started coming back off but it was probably just my body adjusting. I felt lousy taking that stuff. I wouldn't reccomend it.

I have never heard that it is any more dangerous post-op than pre-op, but I would really hate to see anyone get caught up in that vicious cycle again. As another poster said, these products do not work. I know from personal experience - did the Metabolife, worked for three months then stopped working and the weight came right back.

I hate to answer this question... Metabalife has PPA in it, which is thought to cause strokes. It's my opinion that happens when it is abused, but it's JUST my opinion. I took Metabalite (same stuff) pre-op, for weight loss, it did NOT work (surprise?!?!) I have a very slow metabolism tho, even when I'm small, and it DID boost my energy level. I have taken it post-op to help me off a plateau, it raises my energy level... I get up and clean house, do the laundry, grocery shop, do yard work, plan parties at school, PLAY with my son, etc... I stay busy because I have the extra energy. I'm not saying taking it is right, but it didn't seem wrong for me.

Gosh, I would be petrified to take Metabolife or any other product w/ephedrine in it post-op. Today for instance, I was looking at all the wrappers on the protein bars, had one in my hand and almost tossed it in my cart when it said "contains ephedrine to boost metabolism" (or something like that). Back on the shelf it went. I'd be so afraid I would have a heart attack. I think I'm going to stick with the "tool" I have, my little pouch. I'm happy enough to have that. I sure don't want to risk my "second chance" at life.

I would NOT take Metabolife or anything of the sort after surgery. I have not had surgery yet, but I took Metabolife daily about a year ago and after taking it for about a month I started to have severe stomach pains. I went to the ER and they told me that it was "probably" from the Metabolife. I stopped taking it and haven't had it since. So if it has that reaction on a pre-op tummy, I can't imagine what it could do to a post-op tummy. Plus, it has nasty ephedrine in it, which is bad enough by itself.

Never have been told not to take Metabolife. To be on the safe side, it is best to consult your surgeon. He/She should be able to give you info on the pros and cons....

Tom Brokaw is hosting a special on this tonight on NBC, it's called "Dying To Be Thin". I'm not sure of the time, but I'll keep watch and plan on seeing it. I urge you to do the same :)

In my opinion this is the junk that helped to screw up my metabolism. I used to live on Dexatrim, then Accutrim then Metabolife. NONE OF IT WORKED!!! I probably permanently screwed up my body and for what???? I self paid for my surgery ($17,000) and I have no intention of messing it up by going back to those old bad habits. Your small pouch is your tool, use it to your advantage.

I only saw one post that had one of the best reasons for not taking Metabolife. It contains high levels of Ephedrine. That is the main ingredient that speeds up your metabolisism. The reason it does that is that it was originaly an asthma med. It opens up your brochile and allows your body to absorb more oxygen which in turn makes your heart beat faster. I keep it in my dive bag for days when I feel stuffy, so I can get in a good dive. But the pills I take are only 10mg. Not only that you should never take anything with Ephedrine long term it is addictive.
