I am eating a little Yoplait Light yogurt but it has minimal protein. I use to eaqt anything in sight and now nothing appeals for me except Crystal Light and Ice Chips! I need protein - Please Help!!!    — Melissa T. (posted on January 22, 2002)

Hi! I know what you mean. I am 12 days post op and only want water and diet snapple. Try eating some eggs and tunafish. I am personally sick of looking at them but I will discuss that with my surgeon on Friday. Good luck...

You've got to get your protein, girl! Go to www.vitalady.com and order some samples of her protein powders. Try them and find one you like. Some even come in fruit flavors (tasting similar to the Crystal Light, so I've heard ). You can also go to GNC and look at what they have. Shoot for something with at least 20 grams of protein per serving, and low (like less than 4) carbs. I use Optimum 100% Whey Protein powder in chocolate, and I mix it in a shaker with 4 oz soy milk and 4 oz water, plus a few ice cubes. I'm a chocolate freak, and I love it! Hang in there and you'll find a protein you can live with.

Dont panic, most of us were low on protein and water immediately after surgery. Now dehydrated is bad, but short term protein low isnt the end of the world. Try different protein drinks but dont worry.

I couldn't handle much right after surgery either. But, I only ever had maybe 4 or 5 protein shakes and I didn't like them either. The rest of my protein powders that I bought pre-op are still in my cupboard. I am 2.5 months post-op and doing great. Absolutely no problems and am losing consistantly and steadly. I drank heated Swanson's 99% fat free chicken broth, home-made egg drop soup, fat-free yogurt, cooked eggs with a little bit of cheese added, oatmeal sweetened with Splenda, sugar free popsicles and an 8 ounce serving of skim milk with Swiss Miss fat-free, sugar-free hot chocolate mix my first 2 weeks post-op. Now I eat cooked vegitables, meat (mostly turkey or fish), fat-free yogurt, light cheese, home-made soups that are low fat and high in protein, an occasional Lean Cuisine (usually half of one at a time), my 8 ounces of skim milk with hot chocolate mix and I love those sugar-free popsicles. You don't need to down those protein shakes if you can't handle them right now. You'll get enough protein in over the next couple of weeks to hold you over until you can handle a larger variety of foods that will give you the required amounts of protein. And, like Bob H. said, work on your water intake now. You'll be fine.

Try the Knox Nutra Joint. You mix it with 4-8 oz of water, no sugar and lots of protein. Tastes pretty good too.

I'm 6 days post op and I'm still on a liquid diet. I can't get in protein at all right now. I heard a lot of people use Casec powder. You can get it over the counter at a pharmacy. I think I'm going to try to use that when I move to purrees!

Try the Perfect Isopure powder that you mix with milk. They have 50g of protein and are tasty.

Hi Melissa, I am 1 month post-op and I know how hard it is to get all the protein in. Give yourself some time and keep trying new things. I gave myself the first month to get into a routine and situated. Your tastes change big time in that first month. I still have days when I only eat what feels good to me as my tummy can still be finicky BUT most days I do fine with the water and protein. Take it slow and try new stuff. You'll be fine :-)

I once read on this site where someone suggested the Atkins premixed protein drinks. 11oz, 20g protein. Chocolate and Vanilla are actually good. I too tried all the different protein powders and just could not stomach them. I really do like the Atkins protein drinks. You can find them at GNC and Walmart. (They are cheaper at Walmart). They are also "no sugar added". I think they taste pretty much like slim fast. One suggestion though, make sure they are very cold. Good luck.

I was also picky at that stage. I liked the carb solutions premixed in the cappuccino flavor mixed with a little milk (it is kinda thick). You can get that at WalMart. I also liked Blue Bunny fat-free/sugar-free ice cream bars. The chocolate/vanilla flavor has 4 grams of protein per bar and are really yummy! I also made cream of wheat with milk according to the infant recipe on the box. My dr said as long as it ran off the spoon I could have it. Also cream soups with protein powder are good. I used the MLO milk and egg powder because it didn't have any flavoring and mixed just as well with salty foods as with sweet. Good luck to you! Just remember that at this stage it is just get in as much protein as you can. Once the swelling goes down it will be a lot easier to get that protein in your system!

After trying oodles of nastry protein drinks, I finally ordered samples from Vitalady.com and have found some tasteless for general use and cooking as well as some that actually taste good. Also for protien counts in foods, go to http://teaching.ucdavis.edu/nut10/handouts/content.pdf and you will get a pdf -- Adobe Acrobat file to print out of high protein foods, their protein counts and serving sizes. It is one page long and very helpful. A similar list is on page 109 of the Complete Guide to Obesity Surgery.

Try Slim Fast Low Carb MEAL (1/2 can sipped slowly). It has only 1 gram of sugar and tastes yummy. I like the Strawberry. I found a half can prevents dumping and I save the rest in a jar for another time. I know I'm getting a lot of extra vitamins and sometimes I have it at lunch for my meal. The other protein drinks seem to have a yucky taste or too much sugar. Slim Fast is my ticket to extra nutrition. Great for trips in the car when you don't know when the rest of the family is ready for something to eat. I bought some of the Ball canning jars with lids to keep portions in. They have cute small sizes just for us.
