Question:
Has anyone experienced a change in their menstral cycle since losing weight?
Has anyone experienced a change in their menstral cycle since surgery? I know some people that are MO don't have periods but I have them and terribly so. I am hoping this changes once I lose weight. Would be nice to not be so crampy and flow so bad. Any input would be appreciated. — BrendaSinger (posted on January 15, 2002)

Brenda-I've only had one period since my surgery Dec. 11th. I have horrible
cramps and used to take all kinds of anti-inflammtory meds for them;
sometimes even had to take the stronger stuff! The Jan. cycle was the same
as previous ones so I don't really have much to compare to yet. My GYN doc
(my surgeon OK'd it) put me on Vioxx. It is an anti-inflammtory too but is
supposed to have much less chance of clausing bleeding in your stomach
which is what they are worried about. I chewed that puppy up and swallowed
it, I didn't have any stomach trouble. I would think if your cycle is
different that it would not be that abnormal. EVERYTHING is changing about
me! I have lost 28.5 inches of fat (measured all over and added up) and
somewhere between 30-40 lbs. (I'll find out exactly how much when I see the
doc on Thurs.) Good luck to you!

Pre-op I probably had a period a year. The cramps were really bad. Now,
since I've had surgery, the cramps are still bad, but not as serious as
pre-op. I am so regular though! Every 28 days for 5 days, BAM! Cramps
last for 3 days, but a constant dose of Tylenol does the trick.
Good Luck with your surgery.

Actually my periods are better. A year ago I had a D&C because they
were 10-14 days long and very heavy for 7-9 days each month. The surgeon
put me on medication to regulate my cycle after the D&C. That helped,
but they were still about 10 days long.

In April he was ready to do a hysterectomy (I said no). In June, he
discussed WLS with me and thought it would be more beneficial. I had the
surgery in September.
I, of course, started my cycle 2 days post
op even though I wasn't due. Nothing in October (first time to miss one
since I was pregnant 32 years ago!). Since then, they have been much
shorter (5-7 days) and much lighter than pre-surgery.
I am over
50 so it may be the start of menopause, but whatever the reason, I'm happy
and feel sooooooo much better.

Brenda-I have had 3 periods since my surgery in November and the first 2
were terible. Really bad flow and lots of clots, also mentally I was a
mess. I was almost suicidel at one point. My Doctor said this was normal
and expected, and it would pass. Well I just had my last cycle and it was
normal, and I was normal. My Doc says you go through so much hormonal
changes that it takes awhile to get back to normal.

My periods were irregular, and lasted weeks, sometimes months before
surgery. I had 3 D&C's due to bleeding that would not stop. It was
torture. Now, nearly a year PO, my periods are regular and last 4-5 days
with only 1 heavy day. Cramps were worse at first but as the months have
gone by they have become almost nonexistant. Just a little on the heaviest
day. after years of suffering with bad periods I did not know that being
"regular" could be so easy. It is so nice to be able to plan when
your period is coming and not worry about accidents either during my cycle,
or at some unexpected time.
It will get better.

Brenda,
This question really hit home with me. I just got back from an appointment
with my GYN doctor. I too have had heavy periods and lots of pain. Please
don't think that your problems are linked to your surgery. Go to the
doctor and find out for sure. It could be a number of things. I found out
today that I will be having a hysterectomy on 14 March 02 due to my heavy
bleeding, clotting, and pain being caused by a large fibroid. Since I've
had all the kids I am going to have and it will be years before I start
menopause this is the best solution. One thing you might want to talk to
your physician about is placing you on birth control pills. They tried
that with me and it shorten my cycle and it was much lighter but I have
high blood pressure and it cause my blood pressure to go through the roof.
Please see your doctor and let me know how you are. God Bless.

Pre op: 7 days Day one was heavy & clotty. Day two was heavy then it
went away from the end of day 2 to the beginning of day three.... Then it
came back in full force. It lasted a good seven days with pain on 4 out of
seven. POST OP: Day one is mildly heavy. Day 2 & 3 are normal. Day
four is spotting, no real blood. DONE! I got through my period pre op on
a constant supply of Advil most days. I take nothing now. It's awesome.
P.S. I am on a 31 day cycle.

My first period after my surgery was extremely light. AFter about the 2nd
month, it was back to normal. I've noticed that I'm a few days later than
normal. Remember your system has just gone through a real shock and it may
take a few months to get it back to normal.
